While the majority of top business schools across the globe offer a fall intake for their full-time MBA programs with classes starting in August/September, there are a few programs, mostly outside the US, which have a spring intake in January.
Fall vs Spring MBA admissions intake
Most of the MBA programs in the USA have a fall intake, which also means that recruiting companies come to choose, pick and hire the top talent across campuses around the same time. Students who choose a different intake may lose out on this golden opportunity.
On the contrary, schools like INSEAD with campuses in Europe and Asia, in fact, offer better placement opportunities for the spring intake.
Again, there are a number of top programs in Europe and Canada that offer a spring intake. In some cases, the schools offer both the fall and spring intake while in others, there’s just a spring intake.
In this article, we’ve covered all the top MBA programs in USA, Canada, Europe, Asia and Australia that offer a spring intake. We also look at the differences between fall vs spring intake that you should consider before making a decision.
Top 15 MBA programs with a spring intake
1. INSEAD
INSEAD is a globally top-ranked prestigious business school known for its rigorous MBA program with campuses in France and Singapore. It offers 2 intakes – in August (J-batch) and January (D-batch), the biggest different being the August intake can be completed straight in 10 months whereas for the January intake, in addition to these 10 months, it would have a 2-month summer break sandwiched in between.
Both the intakes offer the same curriculum and course structure as well as equal opportunities for campus exchange. The admissions process across both the intakes is equally competitive. Both have the same class size with a globally diverse cohort from varying cultural, professional and academic backgrounds.
Each year INSEAD sees a lot of career changers – around 80% change either function, industry or geography while 25% manage the triple jump by changing all the three.
In case of some career transitions, for example, switching to investment banking, it is strongly recommended to go for the January intake as it includes a 2-month summer break in between during which you can take up an internship.
It’s a known fact that these internships are pivotal in breaking into investment banking roles. So, you need to identify your career goals and if you’re planning a significant career shift, go for the January intake instead of the August intake.
2. Columbia Business School
We just discussed that INSEAD’s January intake gives you an internship option whereas the other (August) intake does not. Whereas in case of Columbia, it’s just the opposite which is also the case with most of the US business schools.
In this case, the January entry (J-Term) does not have an internship option while the more popular August intake does provide a summer internship option.
The J-term option begins in January with a smaller class size and allows you to complete the program in just 16 months instead of 2 years. The shorter duration of the program works favorably in terms of ROI by reducing the opportunity cost.
Other than its schedule, most of the other elements are identical to the August-entry option – they follow the same core curriculum, have the same professors and both have a high selectivity during the admissions process. In the fall of the 2nd year, the 2 tracks are merged, and they graduate as one class.
The J-Term option is popular among those planning to return to their former employer after graduation, company sponsored candidates, entrepreneurs, those with family businesses and those not seeking a drastic career change like those planning to continue in the same industry.

HEC Paris has its campus located 10 miles outside of Paris in the town of Jouy-en-Josasby. It follows a rolling admissions process which means you can apply throughout the year and begin the program in September or January.

Students across both the intakes have the option of a 12-month accelerate MBA or 16-month MBA. Students opting for the longer duration are able to take more than one internship, which can be useful for those aiming for a career change.

Fall vs Spring MBA admissions intake: Which is better?
For applicants who’ve not been able to apply in the fall semester, for certain reasons, instead of waiting for a year, the spring semester provides an option to apply to these schools.
Where internship is not a priority, candidates can apply in either intake. For example, company-sponsored candidates or those who’re planning to go to their former employer after graduation or those planning to launch their own venture or those already running a business or having a family-owned business may choose the spring intake.
Candidates need to do their specific in-depth research to find out if a spring intake suits them and also if there are any differences between the two intakes of a program they are targeting, before deciding to apply.
Usually both the intakes offer a similar curriculum as well as various other activities and experiences, so it’s finally for the candidate to decide which intake is better aligned with their needs.
