After MBA profile building, product management aspirant drops MBA plans because…

Like many product management aspirants, Parth Ajmera was convinced that a top MBA would pave the way for PM opportunities. But he was also aware that his current profile wasn’t competitive for the elite business schools.

So he decided to work with MBA Crystal Ball to understand how to build a strong profile for MBA programs. But while working with us, something happened that made him not just defer, but drop his MBA plans completely.

After Profile Building for MBA, I dropped my MBA plans

Navigating My Path to Product Management Without an MBA

MBA profile building for product management

Google main product manager banana hai toh MBA + minimum 5 years experience toh zaroori hai bhai!

Translation: “Forget about becoming a Product Manager at Google without an MBA and five years of experience, brother!

I heard this repeatedly when considering my career path.

Graduating from IIT BHU in 2020 with a degree in Pharmaceutical Engineering right in the middle of a pandemic, I faced similar challenges.

I lacked an appetite for deep and lengthy research and instead wanted to use whatever I knew to create and deliver value to the world – and extract some of that value for myself as soon as possible.

Software product management felt like the perfect fit because the impact is visible and immediate.

However, breaking into this field seemed difficult for fresh graduates without an MBA.

While on campus, most advice pointed towards pursuing an MBA to gain entry into product management.

Initially, I believed this was my only option until my experience at Leucine, a tech startup, proved otherwise.

Learning on the job

At Leucine, I had to shift from theoretical understanding to practical execution in the role of product manager.

Leucine creates software for the pharmaceutical industry, and my background in Pharmaceutical Engineering seemed relevant, but I lacked direct experience in tech.

I needed to learn quickly and understand complex technical concepts, coordinating with developers, designers, and marketing teams.

The absence of structured mentorship, which is more common in larger firms or MBA programs, forced me to rely on self-learning, informal guidance from colleagues, and trial and error.

Despite these challenges, the immediate rewards were evident.

Projects moved swiftly from ideation to launch, and I could see the tangible impact of my work on the product and its users.

My efforts to streamline processes and enhance user experience were recognized, fueling my rapid professional growth.

Always two there are; no more, no less. A master and an apprentice.

My growth was significantly shaped by Mustaq Singh, the co-founder and CPO of Leucine. His mentorship helped me translate my skills into real-world applications.

He understood my learning style and tailored his advice to my specific challenges and growth areas. His personalized guidance accelerated my learning curve and helped me navigate challenges effectively.

Mustaq’s approach was outcome-driven. He ensured that each lesson was rooted in practical application, and his advice helped me see the results of my decisions quickly.

He instilled a problem-solving mindset, challenging me to consider different perspectives while empowering me to experiment and iterate. This constant refinement, based on customer feedback and data, taught me to confidently tackle complex issues.

Career Guidance from MBA Profile Builder

The MBA Profile Builder from MBA Crystal Ball was instrumental in guiding me through the decision process of pursuing an MBA versus continuing practical learning on the job.

My mentor, Manish Gupta, clarified the prerequisites and competitive landscape of MBA programs, emphasizing the importance of a high GMAT score, impactful leadership in extracurriculars, and the credibility of professional experiences in my applications.

Particularly, Manish highlighted that unless I was committed to obtaining an MBA from a top-tier school and confident in my choice of institution, I might benefit more from direct involvement in projects within a dynamic startup environment.

This came as a revelation, since I had assumed that MCB would only focus on helping me on improving my profile for MBA programs. But the profile builder was much more than that.

It turned out to be a broader career counselling service that kept my interests in mind, even if it meant I never went back to MCB for additional support with the MBA applications.

Manish’s advice helped me recognize that hands-on experience and strategic skill development could rival the learning curve and potential benefits of a formal MBA, leading me to prioritize real-world application and growth in my career path.

This personalized guidance was crucial in shaping my decision to forego the MBA in favor of immediate and impactful career development.

Why I dropped my MBA plans

After following MBA Profile Builder’s advice, I realized an MBA wasn’t necessary to achieve my goals.

Instead, I focused on sharpening my understanding of product management through industry literature, webinars, and online courses while networking with seasoned professionals for practical insights.

A conversation with a senior product manager reinforced that success in this field wasn’t about academic credentials but delivering value, building relationships, and adapting to changing demands.

Embracing this mindset, my rapid growth at Leucine accelerated my journey from senior product manager to lead product manager, and finally to my current role as Chief of Staff.

Opportunities like traveling to exotic locations on the company’s dime to understand customer needs deepened my experience, making the decision to skip the MBA feel low-risk.

These real-world insights, combined with Profile Builder’s strategic guidance, solidified my confidence in charting a non-traditional path and thriving in the dynamic world of product management.

My career progress and future plans

At my current company, I took on increasingly challenging responsibilities, leading product development cycles that created significant value for our clients.

I spearheaded initiatives to improve user feedback, streamlining our development process and enhancing customer satisfaction.

I moved into a senior product manager position, overseeing not only product development but also strategic growth aligned with market trends.

Looking forward, I aim to work on data-driven products that address customer needs, potentially expanding into broader roles involving product strategy.

My long-term vision includes mastering product management and mentoring others. I hope to create an environment where aspiring product managers can learn by doing and challenge traditional norms to find their own paths.

Conclusion

Deciding to bypass the MBA and focus on real-world learning was pivotal in shaping my career. The mentorship from Mustaq, guidance from Manish during the MBA Profile Building process, and the fast-paced learning environment at Leucine enabled me to carve a non-traditional but rewarding path.

My advice to those considering product management is this: identify your strengths, build relevant skills, and embrace the power of practical experience.

It’s not about the credentials on your resume but the value you bring to the table.
