General Queries - Bschools, financing, MBA scholarships

Hello,

I am currently working in an IT firm with 1 year of experience. I have some questions related to MBA and this is the best forum I found while browsing through the internet.

1. MBA in India vs MBA in abroad - As of now I have no plans of getting settled in some other country. I want to get settled in India only, though I won't mind going out of India for a temporary period (for pursuing MBA / 1-2 year job experience)
So, as per the current Indian market which of the two is more valued - MBA in India / MBA from abroad? Which of the two will fetch more job offers IN India?
- - I want to pursue MBA from India as well, unless there is a huge difference between the two options - -

2. MBA in Finance / MBA in IT - I have short-listed my MBA options to two - Finance / IT.
As per reading many blogs and forums I have decided:
If I wish to go for MBA in IT, then I will gain more experience and then pursue one year MBA program ( probably in India )
If I go for MBA in Finance, then I will quit the job and start preparing for 2 year MBA program ( probably in India ) - Because being in IT will be irrelevant if I have to pursue MBA in Finance only ( not sure about this reason ) - Am I correct about this? Your suggestions?
If I wish to go for MBA in Finance, do i need to have a work ex in finance related area?

3. Jobs for MBA - IT/Finance in Indian market - I want to know what kind of jobs are available in India for a person who is pursuing MBA in IT/Finance.
Is the market good enough for these two?
And I am asking this considering the scenarios I mentioned above. For Finance jobs after 2 years of Full Time MBA + 1 year of IT exp. AND for IT jobs after 1 year of Full Time MBA + 5 years of IT exp. (done from India) - What kind of jobs will be available? Are there enough jobs available?

Please help me with a detailed answer.

If you have the financial resources, an international MBA from a good business school will be a good investment.

You are complicating things too much. There are big differences between how the traditional (CAT) MBA works and international (GMAT) MBA programs. Folks can manage a career transition with both.

Think about the timing first (apply now or after 2-3 years) and then take a call. Drop one format from the list and only focus on the other. And it's not a good idea to quit your job to prepare.

Yes, it would help a lot if you can make a transition into your long term industry before the MBA.

There are plenty of jobs available. But there's also plenty of competition for both.

To be honest I am more inclined towards MBA - Finance. However I don't think I am prepared right now for MBA in Finance. I want to gain some experience in Finance market. So my question is -
-- How can I get a job in Finance after B.Tech in IT? Do the finance companies take B.Tech grads? Will clearing CFA help?

Transitioning into a mainstream finance job will be difficult. However, you could look at the intersection of both and then explore relevant opportunities:

Just having a CFA won't help. Some practical experience in the technology that finance companies are using will help more.

I have a bachelors degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from Amity University Rajasthan. I also have work experience of nearly 5 years (will be completed by June, 2016) and have worked with organisations like -

Indian Express - (Editorial, Web desk)
CNN IBN/News 18 - (Editorial, Web desk)
ScoopWhoop - (Editorial, Web desk)

I currently work with Deloitte as a part of their Marketing and Communications team. I am planning for a distance MBA (majoring in Digital Marketing) from where I could garner skills that would leverage my career growth, financially as well as hierarchically.

As I switched my job industry and as journalists don't get paid well in their initial jobs, I could not get a good hike or say, a package when I moved into corporate. I always wanted to an MBA. And Digital Marketing is something that interests me.
I am not looking for colleges which just have a good brand name and sell their courses for the heck of it (not naming any, but there are a few).

However, I wanted to go abroad and study, but there are financial issues that pull me back. I will certainly write GMAT by the year end. And even if I get an scholarship, the process would a year and half from now. Meanwhile, I want to have a degree here to be on the safer side. I can use that GMAT score to do a one year course later after I am done with my MBA here.

Can you please suggest me a good institute for distance MBA in India/abroad, which is valued in the industry, worldwide and is appreciated by experts. Also, that could help me get a good raise (agreed, that skills count and I would enhance them).
P.S. I will continue to work throughout my MBA.

Let's tackle the easier question first.

Here's a list of the best online MBA programs ranked by some leading publications.

Now the not-so-easy part. I think your plan to get an online MBA first and then think about a 1-year MBA is not very optimal. Here's why:

- You are trying to get 2 MBA degrees in quick succession. The first one may reduce the odds of the second, since the utility and timing of the first would be questioned.

- MBA programs do get a few folks from the media industry, however journalists form a very small proportion of that. The primary reason for that is that it's a bigger jump (skill-wise) for journos to manage the transition into corporate roles.

- Since you have already transitioned into a corporate role, moving out may make it more difficult to move back in even if you have a top full-time MBA.

Why not try to look for ways to pick up new skills and grow within that ecosystem? Apart from the focus on communication, your department may have marketing and administration oriented roles as well.

At the same time find other ways to build your own brand, visibility and network. That may give you more opportunities than an MBA.

Well, now that I have taken a step, there's no looking back. I am looking for a good MBA course, where I would get my major in Digital Marketing. Majority of the top MBA colleges which have distance courses are just selling out their names and making money. However, a few colleagues told me that their satellite courses are worth. Can you throw some light on that?

Also, do you have idea about one such satellite course (in Digital Marketing) which would give me leverage in my career?
