Narendra bhai, that's a pretty lengthy post
MBA essays would expect the same story to be narrated within strict word limits. It'll be a good idea to start working on squeezing out only the most important points that you want to highlight.
Moving on to your queries.
You are right about many things. There are risks even after getting a good degree.
I realise money isn't the factor for you at this stage. But think about the other aspects too.
There aren't many programs where folks with 10+ years of experience fit in. Job opportunities will be tough to come by, and when they do, work permits will be difficult to get.
Having said that, if you don't get a degree now, you'll probably not get one for the remaining part of your professional life.
So, narrow down the list of programs and apply. Keep networking from now with folks in the industry you want to work in. Keep the leads warm over the next few months and years.
We'll be publishing a story tomorrow on our blog about a 35+ year old who got into a Canadian program with scholarship. Watch out for that.

Sorry for the long introduction. But this blog is very much about IT, finance, banking, vc,etc. Did not find anyone who belongs to dirty oil and gas business.
Oil and gas is still traditional old companies like our parents used to work in 30 yrs and you become VP or manager. We still have people who are 65+ and running show.
I will check for the case study tomorrow as you.mentioned. then I will ask if any.

Hi sameer
I have done my b tech in IT in 2013 from GGSIPU (took an year extra due to medical illness).
Have worked for around 8 months as a software tester.
And then I have a business experience with a cousin of mine. For about 1.5yrs....yet to appear for a gmat which universities should i target.
Preferred destination( Canada and Australia) my budget is not v huge.....in the 17-18L(can be extended somewhat) bracket....
Please suggest my chances and a the GMAT score in should target.
USA is also an option if u suggest a good college with a good ROI.
Would be very glad to hear from you.

As the numbers don't add up, I assume the business experience was part-time and in parallel with your software testing job. This makes the overall experience quite less.
With family businesses (where your colleages are relatives) it's difficult to built credibility around what you've done and the accomplishments.
Scoring high on the GMAT (20-30 points higher than the average for your target schools) should help.
Without a scholarship, it is unlikely that the budget you mention would be sufficient as the good Indian programs also cost more than the range.
But don't rush into applying at this stage. Work for a while more and gain some solid managerial and leadership experience. Also, build up your savings. no point getting into a course abroad and then having to come back with a huge debt.

Sameer,
Sorry for that review. But that's what I felt. Still I agree that your book is the best one for preparation. No matter what I felt but the book is best reference for essay and stuff.
Thanks for the two interviews you posted. They are quite useful.
I am targeting for HKUST, NUS, NTU, tsinghua, Beijing/shanghai. But I have spouse and kud as dependent. In such case what could be the cost of one year course with two dependents. The course fees are
HKUST HK$520K roughly high side. (1HK=INR8.5)
NUS and NTU is $sing 55000.
But I am not sure about the living costs and people experiences. I know bit of Singapore I have been there for vacation twice. But hongkong -????
Also from.visa point how easy it is.
Regards,
Narendra

No need to apologise, Narendra. Your honesty is exactly what gives the review credibility.

I'm not aware of country specific costs. If the official website doesn't mention it, the best option would be to get in touch with the admissions team and ask them to put you in touch with current students or alumni who got more recent and relevant data that you could use.

Unlike countries like the U.S. that leave a lot to luck (with the H1B cap), for other countries it's more a matter of convincing a reputed local company (easier said than done). They'll manage the visa formalities.

Hi MBA Crystal Ball,
Nice to see an Indian web page helping out Indian MBA applicants. I have purchased Sameer's book and am currently reading it.
So, coming to the point, I have 4 years of work experience under my belt, currently working with HCL Technologies as a Lead Engineer( Not into IT. I do stress analysis of commercial aircraft components). I gave my GMAT recently and scored a 650(was expecting 700). I have done mechanical engineering from a decent Engineering college, decent academics and extra curriculars (was the students' body head of Mechanical Engineering department, responsible for organizing the college technical fest..etc). I will retake the GMAT in 2 months time.
There are a few things that are plaguing me
1. I am not sure about how i want my career to grow, or what i want to specialize in, post MBA. In short i don't have a strong story to convince the adcoms.
2. Even if i score in 700+ range on the GMAT, given my profile, will it be competent to apply for a top 20 b- school. Or am i better off applying to a mid range school.
3. It stems from the answer to the earlier question. Is it worth doing an MBA form a b- school which does not give me a high ROI ?

This question is more important than the others, Ankur.
Even if you score a 780 and get into a Top 20 Bschool, the dilemma about career direction will continue to trouble you.
It's not so much about convincing the Adcoms, but more about convincing yourself first why you need an MBA.
Spend some time trying to learn about multiple careers, what professionals do in each and whether it fits your preferences.
And of course, continue working on the GMAT in parallel.

Hi,
I am having quite a difficult time. I initially planned to do CA.I cleared my CPT in my first attempt. But did not clear my IPCC until the 5th attempt. I am in my second year of Bcom from Distance university in Mumbai. I am thinking of pursuing an MBA from a really good university like IIM-A or IIM-C, ISB, XLRI. I do not have any work experience. I did my 10th from Srilanka British board and did my 12th from Thailand American Board.
I got 3A’s, 2B’s, 1C, 1D and 1E in 10th and I got 80% in 12th according to GPA conversion.
I do not have any work experience. Are there any chance of getting into a good MBA college, if so what scores do I have to get in various examinations to make it possible. Please reply
