I decided to have a go at GMAT last week,
Mock test 620, and i have scheduled my GMAT exam on the 28th of Nov, so have a couple of months to prepare.
Academically not spectacular, B.Tech from MPSTME, NMIMS - 2.8/4...started drastically...but improved in every trimester
Work Ex of more than 4 years with Accenture as a Developer, Middleware Expert and Intergration Analyst.
My aim was to get into the Advertising industry so, along with Accenture i have 2 years of experience in Movie Publicity and Design and worked on the communication of a number of Bollywood movies.
Worked as a content writer for couple of websites for a year
Working as a Business Development Head of a friends newly formed Pharmaceutical company
Last week i paid off my education loan and seems like the right time to go for another, plus i want an upgrade career wise and finally want to work in the advertising industry full time
I want to pursue MBA in marketing and communications as i believe this is the closet to a program that will help me get a job in the advertising industry, but i am open to opinions telling me i am wrong
I am unable to zero down on the schools and programs that leads to my dream job. if you could assist in anyway, it will be of great help.

You may have to do a little re-thinking on that plan. Here's why:rituraj mishra wrote:I want to pursue MBA in marketing and communications as i believe this is the closet to a program that will help me get a job in the advertising industry, but i am open to opinions telling me i am wrong.
What you've done so far (on a part-time basis) in advertising has been on the creative side. An MBA prepares students for business roles in various industries.
When you are targetting a GMAT MBA, your pre-MBA background also matters. Unless you have strong contacts in the industry, an MBA is unlikely to make the career change easy.
And if you have strong contacts, you wouldn't the MBA in the first place.

Why assume that the MBA is your only option for career advancement?nazzyb wrote:If in case I dont get these 2..what would you say about...
Time to question and review the idea of spending a lot of money on a program when it was never a brand that excited you.

I guess you've already made up your mind.nazzyb wrote:I cannot wait another year for MBA as have other commitments. So please help me out which college I can still target
In that situation, while I can't suggest which option to choose, all I can recommend is to try with all your might to network and get into the role you want...irrespective of the bschool you attend.

Thanks for the guidance but now the scenario is changed little bit..
I got admission call from SP JAIN Mumbai..PGPM and interview calls from IIM L and Indore. Now if I am able to convert both IIM's,what should I choose..SP JAIN Mumbai/IIM L/ IIM I.

I have read your blog and I must thank you for the wealth of knowledge it is! And I have a question about extra-curricula activities that might help boost my application. Every college stresses for an all-round personality and I was wondering what exactly will help. Could it be that I play the guitar, have self-published a book or that I need to volunteer wherever I feel strongly for?
Regards,
Tanya.

I hope you are well. I am sure you are doing an excellent job.
I am an experienced engineer in oil and gas sector. In exploration production companies, there are four pilars mainly geoscience, reservoir engineerin, well engineering and drilling and production department. I have 11 yeas in well engineering and drilling.
Finished graduation in 2004, from pune university in petroleum engineering and straight to reliance Ind Ltd. Worked as drilling engineer, mainly site based and then later as drilling fluids engineer and fluids supervisor. Mainly worked in deepwater offshore. Where internationally people required 10-15 years of exp to enter into deepwater domain, we were there with 0-1 yrs exp. Exited reliance in Sep 2010 after 6 years and went to Kuwait oil company.
Onshore drilling. High pressure high temp sour gas wells. Same job same designation, same work but better pay. In our sector, high pressure high temperature experience is must. But Kuwait oil was place below standards. Could not learn much. The experience was like leaRN on your own and company did not have any policy to guide through. Got fade up quickly. Certainly family was happy because in reliance I was out of home for 3-4 weeks in row. in Kuwait, I could return from field same day. But I was done.
Then went to work as consultant for British petroleum in Algeria. This job taught me a lot. We were covered by policy and not suppose to cross policy to get jobs done. People strictly followed. During 1St management, learnt how to use policy, how to make changes in documentation and with 2nd mgmt learnt more engineering it was best for new entrants because they don't need to ask and get directions. Just follow policy. For people who have worked long time in BP is kind of barrier. They can't get things done easily because f policy. Anyways.
But it was rotation job and I was out of home for 6 months In a year. Family life was screwed. At the end in may 2015 I quit the job else I could have been fired. I was kind of loosing interest and company was scaling down due to shattered oil prices. Since then I am home searching new job.
Meanwhile got in touch with old friends and they recommend me to do higher education. I am already doing a distance learning course in investment bankking from icfai to test my interest, enthusiasm and to check whether I am still interested in education. got admitted in 2009 but only recently cleared two exams out of four. Plan it to finish before may 2015. Met two institutes who work on to send students to higher education geebee and grad dreams.
I am in confused state. I feel that I should do MBA and change domain if possible to finance or projects. Mainly because I have seen one of our alumni doing this and he seems to be happy to change careers. I felt why should not do it. I did know anything about drilling before the job and same way I can learn. Certainly there is struggle, and tough time as I may feel that I should go back to drilling as I could still earn more. This is best side of MBA.
Worst case I feel that I don't get change in domain. After the course, I go back to same old drilling and engineering. Still in out field companies prefer 15 yrs exp quality for senior position, 20 yrs quality exp for manager. but mainly masters degree. My friends recommend that the time is gone for masters degree and now I won't enjoy and do it religiously. But I feel the higher education in uk will open doors for new jobs. due to visa restrictions and no masters degree, I can't get through system. I have to let go certain good jobs just because no masters degree.
money is not my problem. I have wife and daughter. And I am also preparing my wife to prepare her transcripts and things and get ready to fly with me to uk. Uk is my choice because the courses are only one year, oil industry is in Aberdeen or Edinburgh in Scotland, and target UNIS are same.
Another deal is it is expected that oil prices will flourish in 2017 it could be early or late. But all i can do it get higher education and stand exactly where the jobs open on exact date and time.
Please guide me further. Because I can't sit at home and wait for better things to happen. Also if higher education can do something better or may be only 5% increase in my salary, I am ready because the benefit is for life time.
If possible, I would like to meet you or your team in person. Also let me know if you need any details from me.
Regards,
Narendra

Both ideas should help if you can grown them into something beyond being a superficial hobby.tanyakum wrote:Every college stresses for an all-round personality and I was wondering what exactly will help. For instance, self-publishing is very easy. What's more challenging is to be able to promote it and turn it into a moderate success (if not a best-seller).
