Post by MBACrystalBall » February 26th, 2013, 10:48 am
The W.P. Carey Company Networking Night (CNN) is a great way for students to rub shoulders with their prospective employers. On the official website, you’ll find stories of how students have got used the CNN opportunity to land interships and post MBA jobs.
On our blog, Ajay Karajgikar explains how he not only got a full MBA scholarship (100% tuition waiver) from the W.P. Carey MBA, he was also awarded a graduate assistantship.
On this thread he has agreed to answer any questions you may have about Carey MBA admissions, the class profile, average GMAT scores, internships, graduate assistantships, jobs, placements etc

My question is what factors are considered by b-schools in USA while providing financial assistance ? (mostly)
Also, do they by prefer fresh/current GMAT scores more for scholarship ?
Thanks

I wish to know more about graduate assistantship. When do you apply for it and when do you let the school know that you are interested. Can you please provide more details about the process involved?

Apologize for replying late. Actually, I was bit tied up at work :-) To answer your question, we have got a fresh engineering graduate joining with us this year at Carey. So, it is possible.
Having said that, it seems like a sound plan to apply with some work experience. Remember, it helps you understand how things work in an industry of your choice and also makes you understand the business processes to some extent.
Schools prefer students with decent work experience as class room discussions become more interesting and thought provoking with varied student experiences. Finally, you not only have to convince the adcom but also hiring organizations about lack of pre-MBA experience.
If you can do that, you are good to go even without work experience. Please let me know if this answers your question completely.

As far as GA process at Carey, or most of the schools for that matter, goes, it is at the time of admissions. There is no separate application/essay for GA. In fact, I did not even mention it in the interview or the application.
It is purely based on available opportunities and admission decision. That is, You don't have to do much. I would still suggest you to check the GA section on school website or get in touch with the adcom.
Please let me know if you are looking for anything specific.

I did come across your name in pagalguy under Carey 2013 and now am glad to know you were part of MBA crystall ball as well. I am currently preparing my applications for b-schools including WP Carey. Two main reasons for the school -
1. Scholarship - Any idea how/what criteria does adcom award it to students? 50% or 100% schol is something phenomenal and I dont see lot many schools doing this out there.
2. Intel and IBM - My post MBA goal is sales and business development in one of these IT majors. What kind of roles does these companies recruit for?
Also, please let me know if I can give you a ring to chat more. Thank you!

Glad to know you are interested in WPCarey program.
Regarding scholarship calculation, it is pretty much hidden as I have seen students with GMAT 700+ not getting enough schol. One thing is for sure;the adcom takes a holistic view of your profile. So, put up your best show, honestly.
Answering your second question,
Mostly technology companies hire for supply chain positions. E.g. operations managers, product managers.
I would encourage you to talk to the alumni working at employers of your choice.
You can ring me this Sunday. My email id is a.karajgikar@gmail.com. drop m an email and we should set up the time.
Happy to help!
