Question on Quora:
What is a rewarding career path for someone who wants to be involved in the future?
My response:

Many would respond to such questions with a list of 'futuristic' skills like AI, machine learning…

But from a more fundamental perspective, I'd say the best way to a rewarding 'future' career is by identifying, understanding and solving the problems of 'today'.

When you start looking at problems in a deeper, more engaging manner, you'll realise that the solution is generally multi-pronged requiring varied skills.

Here's an example.

You could always build a better mouse trap, using advanced technology, to tackle the menace of rats in the grain warehouse.

But before you start building thousands of mouse traps, take a step back and try to understand why there are so many mice in the first place.

Possibly it's an inventory management issue.

Maybe the solution is to focus on better logistics, so that the stock of grains keeps moving and the warehouse isn't converted into a buffet restaurant for evil rats. And save tons of food from being wasted.

With one right question, you've replaced a tech product with an inventory management plan.

So coming back to the original question, start polishing your problem solving skills.

You can always hire experts to build a mouse-trap or an SCM IT system.
