Hi Ashish,

I have an interview call for the 7th batch of PGPEX program. Before I ask specific queries I have some general queries:

1. How may people are there in the interview panel? Is there any general profile of the interview panel?
2. Is there a time limit per interview?
3. Is one required to bring proofs of all extra-curricular activities? What if one can not reproduce some?
4. I have been advised to keep answers short. Not going beyond a minute. Is it really the case? How can one even introduce oneself within a minute (given that a candidate has atleast five years of work-ex).
5. Do you have any idea of the ratio of interviews to converts?

Some specific questions are:

1. Do they ask these typical questions as 'Describe Yourself', 'Why MBA', 'Why IIMC', 'Strengths/weaknesses' etc? Please point out any other typical questions.
2. What level of understanding is required of the topics concerning economic current affairs?
3. Do they ask questions from graduation subjects? And any questions from mathematics/statistics?

Hi PearlPet,

Please find my responses inline...

1. How may people are there in the interview panel? Is there any general profile of the interview panel?
Interviews are taken by IIM Calcutta Professors. Only one word of caution - don't try fooling them.

2. Is there a time limit per interview?
Interviews can typically go on anywhere between 15-30 mins.

3. Is one required to bring proofs of all extra-curricular activities? What if one can not reproduce some?
Any significant accomplishment does require a proof. If you don't have one for any such accomplishment, please do inform the office or the interviewing professor. If you are associated with any organization/non profit, a letter or an email detailing your contribution would do.

4. I have been advised to keep answers short. Not going beyond a minute. Is it really the case? How can one even introduce oneself within a minute (given that a candidate has atleast five years of work-ex).
Better to keep responses succinct and precise. There are no given rules as you mentioned for an interview.

5. Do you have any idea of the ratio of interviews to converts?
Sorry, can't share this information.

Some specific questions are:

1. Do they ask these typical questions as 'Describe Yourself', 'Why MBA', 'Why IIMC', 'Strengths/weaknesses' etc? Please point out any other typical questions.
Yes, be prepared on these.

2. What level of understanding is required of the topics concerning economic current affairs?
A fair level of understanding. You should be aware of any major developments in the economic and political landscape.

3. Do they ask questions from graduation subjects? And any questions from mathematics/statistics?
Depends on the interviewer and your luck!

Interviews carry significant weightage for admission so prepare well. Good luck.

Cheers,
IIMCPGPEX

Hi

I have a few queries about the components of PGPEX program.

------------------------------------------------------------------
My first query is regarding "International Project And Study Tour" part of the curriculum at IIMC PGPEX Program. The website says... "Participants will be required to undertake an international project or an associated study tour for a period of 4 weeks. This will be facilitated by the Institute."

And in FAQ section I find ... "Participants will be required to undertake an international study tour (if available) or a project in India (with international component) as a part of the curriculum for a period not exceeding four weeks. The travel expenses which include airfare, and medical insurance will be borne by the Institute. All other expenses including visa, food, personal and miscellaneous expenses are to be borne by the participants."

Can you please elaborate a bit more on this? Such as:
With which international b-schools does IIMC have tie-ups with for student exchange?
What does exactly the international component of a project mean?

------------------------------------------------------------------

What is the rough distribution of theoretical and case-study part of overall curriculum?

------------------------------------------------------------------

I find that IIMC invites faculty from industry as well. Does IIMC have any tie-up with any other b-schools in and outside India for faculty exchange?

------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks in anticipation.

Ashish - In the past students have been to UC Boulder, Colorado; Monash University, Australia; Brunel University, UK etc. Some students opt for internships that involve working on some projects that give them international exposure - this is more beneficial for those with limited international exposure. For eg: Go-to market strategy for some company, Product Launch strategy etc.
------------------------------------------------------------------

What is the rough distribution of theoretical and case-study part of overall curriculum?
Largely Case Based. I'd say 70-30 between Cases and Theory. Even Accounting/Finance/HR Management subjects have cases. Cases bring out the practical elements that aid decision-making. They don't teach how to learn theory but how to apply it in different contexts. Many exams are also case based.
------------------------------------------------------------------

I find that IIMC invites faculty from industry as well. Does IIMC have any tie-up with any other b-schools in and outside India for faculty exchange?
Ashish - Dude these are all superficial things. I was in the same chakkar when applying. Bahar ki faculty!
Waise we do have visiting faculty who teach us elective courses in Strategy, Finance, Systems etc. There are few good professors who come from US, Europe etc but there are no firang profs who come here compared to ISB. Though we do have some really good profs here at IIM C only who we wish could teach us more than one course in PGPEX.

We do have industry faculty for Marketing for example. Many profs like the reputed Prof. BBC in Finance has had years of industry experience, Prof. Ranjan Das in Strategy etc. We also invite industry folks and alums for leadership talk and workshops as part of our 'Being a CEO' series. Hope this helps.
------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi,

I have a work experience of 7.5 years in Oil and Gas downstream sector (a gov PSU) in areas of Projects and Operations.I had my interview of IIMC PGPEX this Oct. I find myself in a unique position as I see most of the crowd aiming for Ex MBA from IT or IT enabled services.I want to know what are my career prospects after Ex MBA. Most of the downstream petroleum sector in India is state controlled and they rarely hire at mid level. What could be other areas where I can migrate ? Consulting, or general managerial roles ?. I think present batch of PGPEX has atleast one guy from this sector. Pls give your suggestion.

The story is same across all B-Schools in India because IT is in our genes :). Are you doing an MBA to switch careers, or to stay in the same domain - first got to decide that. And I don't know why people call this Executive MBA. E-MBA concept is totally different. PGPEX an MBA for experienced folks, that's it. We have the same courses and electives as the two year PGP's. Just that we get less time to study everything :).

In my opinion, Tech and Consulting companies are a preferred choice for many Indian MBA students. So its good to have exposure to IT/Strategy related subjects and if that's not your priority, you can always go back to any PSU. Its not easy to become a management consultant after working for 7.5 years as the Bains and McKinseys and BCG's prefer to hire young blood. You can become a Domain Consultant in the Oil and Gas Domain for a Tech/Product company and such roles are highly valued because of dearth of skilled professionals. All IT service companies have verticals focusing on Energy/O&G sector. General Management roles - don't have a great idea but could think of Reliance as an option.

Now if you want to return back to the PSU post MBA, the program would also be good for you because Cal has a lot of focus on Operations/Finance and you can take a sabbatical from your PSU. The advantage you also have in Calcutta is the smaller batch size and more face time with professors, which you won't experience in a batch of 80+ students. Good luck with your results!

I have worked in manufacturing sector for 4 years and currently working in education services industry as a part of corporate finance team.

Hi Vishal -

It is completely a personal decision. Depends on what your career objectives are. If you want to work outside India, then explore US MBA options else an MBA from a top Indian school is good enough in case you plan to work in India or APAC post-MBA. If you want to settle back in the Middle-East, either of them should work for you. Indian MBA's come with a cost advantage as you might already know.

In US, Executive MBA's are meant for executives with significant work experience (> 10-12 years). I would rather believe you have to pursue a full-time 2 year MBA from US in that case. IIM Calcutta's PGPEx is a one year MBA for executives with more than 5 years of work ex, hence I would not call it an Executive MBA. Hope it helps...
