Hello Sir,

I recently took the GMAT and scored 720 in it. I have graduated from BITS-Pilani with B.E.(Hons) in Computer Science. I am currently placed in Sapient Global Markets, Blore. However, my CGPA is really low - 6.34/10. I would be applying for colleged only after 2 years of work experiece, that is, in 2015. I wanted to know if I should be looking at NYU Stern ideally with my score, cgpa and profile.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My profile in Brief:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

10th - 94%

12th - 89%

B.E.(Hons) Computer Science - 6.34/10

Thesis - Data Analytics, Supervised by Dean, IIIT Hyderabad.

School Head boy - 2008-2009

Selected for International Student Exchange Program (JENESYS) - 2008

University Footbal Team Captain - 2010-2012

Department head - Department of Sponsorship and marketting - 2010 - 2012

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The reason I am asking this question is so that i can better prepare my profile depending on your suggestion.

Your answer would be greatly appreciated. My major worry is my CGPA. Would it be a bottle neck for my apllication? How can i off shoot it?

Thank you :)

720 is a good score and it shows that your CGPA might not be the only thing to show your academic bent. For most schools you can write an extra essay explaining why CGPA might not represent the whole story about your academics.

There is no hard and fast rule that you can follow that will guarantee an admission to an MBA program. However, there are certain things that you must show through your application that improves your chances. I would suggest read a few books, articles etc. (I am sure you can find references on this site somewhere) to familiarize yourself with the admission process. Another suggestion is do your best at work and beyond. Good things will follow, don't be too tied up with doing things that might not be of any interest to you just because someone says that doing so will help you in the MBA application (just my opinion).

Hi Anubhav,
I am a CA and have worked in finance for two years now. Though I wish to continue in finance, I feel an MBA abroad will enrich my knowledge and give me a chance to work internationally.
I have a few doubts: Will my articleship period count towards work experience? If that happens I have a chance to add more variety to my MBA application and may hold a better chance of getting a seat.
If that does not count, can I add the working experience during that period in my MBA essays or would that be counted as a study period?
Would I have a good chance of finding a job in and around New York?
Thanks.

Hi,

Articleship period if I am correct would be similar to Internship. Technically it will not be counted as your full time work experience. However, you are free to share relevant experiences during the time via your essays, during interview etc. that will help your candidacy.

There is a career center at Stern that will help you with all the preparations (networking, resume, access to alumni etc.) for finding a job. In the end everyone gets a job, sometimes it might take longer (like during bad economy). Let me know if you need any other information.

Hi Anubhav,

I am a Computer Science Engineer with first class grades in India. I wrote GMAT recently and scored 650 (Quant 48, Verbal 32) I have 15months experience as a System Engineer in Infosys Limited. I am applying to B Schools for Full time MBA for Fall 2014 and NYU, Stern is one of my options.

I am aware that I will be considered early in my career to apply for MBA with low GMAT. But, I believe apart from 15 months of professional work experience I have experience
in organising 2 of my college fests ( one was the VTU fest which is a state level fest and the other intra college fest ) I have been involved in organising various cultural and
technical events at departmental level. I will be very enthusiastic in joining the various clubs in NYU, Stern and actively participate in events.

I have also been socially active. I have taken the initiative to save trees and arranged for a tree planting event in my college campus to spread awareness. Also I have interacted and visited many orphanages and rural schools to spread technical awareness among the children in India.

I aspire to bring a difference to the world and make it a better place for everybody. I want to do an MBA to understand
the global economy ( MBA in USA ) and build my leadership skills. An MBA will help me gain knowledge about the various
aspects related to business which would help me gain confidence as a leader.

Please let me know my chances of getting an admit into Stern. And also other B schools which you would think is appropriate for me to apply.

Regards,
Medha
