Hi,

I want to know whether my profie is suitable for NYU Stern or not.

GMAT - 680 (reappearing in October, confident of getting around 720)

Work Ex - 5 Years (IT - Data Warehousing) (2.5 Years Accenture, 2.5 Years Headstrong)

Reason for MBA - Want to go into finance consulting, specially Credit Risk domain. Have worked in Credit Risk project for past 2 years. Involved in Credit Risk competency, developed some POCs for the same too.

Extra Curricular -
Lead Fun@Work initiative in office at Bangalore center
Part of an interactive theater group based in Bangalore for the past 18 months
Social Media Manager for a start-up health care company

Achievements -
Numerous awards in college in cultural events
Award in Accenture for performance as a fresher
Certificate of excellence in current company for all round contribution

Can you please let me know how strong is my profile for Stern, assuming a score of 720 in GMAT?

Your profile looks good and I would encourage you to apply. However, I cannot comment on the strength of your application. The strength of your application depends on many factors including your experience, extra-curricular, future aspiration, leadership roles etc. You should bring out the relevant details in the essays to make a strong case on why you want to do an MBA and why Stern will be a good fit.

I am not sure if you know that representative from Stern will be in India, see below for more details, for NYU Stern Presentation. This will be a good opportunity to know more about Stern and also meet up with alumni.

hi. i have got admit to NYU for MASTERS IN COMPUTER SCIENCE. i know i would want to do a MBA at some point in time later. at this point my question is do you thing it would be better to do my MS and then pursue my MBA or should i go directly for my MBA. i am an electronics graduate from Mumbai.

i feel that i should be pursuing my interest but i feel that i am interest in both of them. sometimes i feel getting a international degree should help me further and then sometime i feel i should just skip MS and do my MBA.

Dear Prerak,

There are several other factors that you should consider and they depend on personal choices so I will not go into them. To answer your question, if post MBA you want to remain in the same industry i.e. the one that is directly linked to your MS then you should go for both MS and MBA. If you want to change the industry post MBA then I would suggest going just for a MBA.

I am considering to apply for full-time MBA at Stern for fall 2013. It would be a great help if you can share some of your experiences or insights on the student life and the community at Stern. Also how are the career opportunities in the garments retail and luxury marketing sector how helpful is the career development program of Stern. I know about the professional and social clubs listed on the website but other than that are there any hobby-clubs catering to interests such as travelling and motorsports. or some other interesting ones.

It's great that you are looking for MBA program. I thoroughly enjoyed my two years at Stern whether it was academics or social life. There is a strong sense of collaborative community at Stern. Unlike what one might think of NYC, I felt a whole different environment at Stern and NYU. You will have ample chances to interact not only with students at Full Time program but also from Part Time and other institutes at NYU. You will have access to all the fun stuff Stern has to offer and if you have any time left then you can also participate in other trips/programs organized for NYU, which includes ski-trips, broadway shows and many other adventure sports. You can also travel to outside US as a part of the curriculum like DBi (doing business in), going to other schools for a semester or other academic trips. I lived in Palladium (on-campus housing) and there were several other programs (specifically for people at Palladium) that would keep you pretty busy socially. So bottom line is that you will have a great time and there will be no dearth of opportunities in anything that you are interested in.

Luxury Retail at Stern is one of the most sought after program. Being in NYC you will have the opportunity to interact with who's who in the field. Stern also has a special track where students will collaborate with one company in the field and will be exposed to various facets of the industry. Job opportunities are great but they also depend on your approach. It is a little difficult for international students in this field but again there is no general rule that applies to all. Rest assured you will come out with network, knowledge and information that is going to help you in your career where-ever you end up after MBA.

I graduated in Bcom Hons and did my post graduation in M.A English and am currently working in the field of Instructional design. I want to pursue my MBA and i have my heart set on Stern for all the obvious reasons. I havent written my Gmat yet. Im planning to do it in the next 3 months. I guess considering time lines i can apply for the next academic year because the admissions happen around feb- march? I also want to know, to what extent do they finance your education and how do you go about it?

Sorry for being late in posting the reply.

I am happy that you are considering Stern for your MBA. There are three rounds that you can apply to. Majority of applicants apply by second round. You can check Stern's website for the exact dates for each round. You should apply when you feel confident about your application. GMAT is just one aspect of the application and what differentiates you is your essays, work experience, leadership roles, why MBA, why Stern etc. So you have to make sure that you have put in the best effort to bring out the unique aspects about you.

When I was at Stern (2008-10), international students could get USD 40k loan per year without any co-signer and full fee plus living expenses with a co-signer. I would encourage you to email financial assistance folks at Stern to know about the current situation. Also there are lots of scholarships etc that you are considered for or can apply independently. If you apply by 1st round then your chances are higher for scholarship from Stern. Also you can work (after 1st semester) part time at school (NYU as well) as teaching assistant or several other temp. jobs. You will have access to all job postings while at school. You can also take loans from banks here in India.
