My name is Varun and I am originally from India and currently working for an International Sports Federation in Switzerland. I am currently involved with sports operations but would eventually like to move to commercial side of sports - sponsorships and marketing. I would like to know if MBA from MIT would be beneficial in this transition. I also want to know if recruiters from this industry actively recruit MIT-SLOAN graduates. Also, being an international student what are my chances as compared to a US national. Do these companies have preference for local candidates for marketing roles? Any help on these questions would be appreciated.

Yes, MIT would help greatly with the transition. We have many classes that deal with marketing. You may also be interested in our Enterprise Management track.

Our recruiters recruit for jobs all over the world - not just local in Cambridge. Many of our students are international, and many return to their home countries to work.

I got to know about the the Sloan sports conference lately and realized that MIT is quite big on the sports scene.

I would like to work in CPG companies like Nike, Coca-Cola, Visa etc in their sports marketing teams post MBA. Do these companies recruit at the campus and how difficult is it for an international student to land marketing roles in the US? I read that most of these companies unlike consulting companies and i-banks do not sponsor H1Bs. Is it true?

How does the career office help students who do not want to get into traditional industries? Also, is there specific help for international students who would need a work authorization to work in the US?

Dear Vranjan,

The companies you mentioned do recruit here. Last year, Nike hired over 5 students to work there in the summer.

Many companies want diverse applicants so being from an international country will not make it harder.

As far as the Visa question, those situations are hard to predict. You would have to work with the company directly.

Our CDO office is very large - over 20 employees! Many of our students want to work in non-traditional industries so they have plenty of experience with that!

You sit down with someone from CDO during your first year. You can talk to them about career goals, and they can talk about different companies, classes you should take, opportunities, etc.

We also have an international Student Office who will help accepted students in the Visa process.

Hi Rebecca,

I am a Chartered Accountant from India (equivalent to CPA) with five years work experience as a financial auditor. I wish to know whether being from a non-IT background gives me a better chance of acceptance.

I have seen that the median GMAT score at MIT is 717. What is the average for Indian students? Currently my score is 700. Would you suggest re-taking the GMAT and trying to improve my score?

I would like to work in the area of corporate finance in the U.S. after completing my MBA. Do you see that as a practical option after doing my MBA? What kind of roles do Indian students with my background get into? Would you advise applying to MIT? Do you think I am a competitive candidate for MIT?

I’ve done my Btech Comp Science from a reputed institute in India and post Btech, inspite of getting a job offer with an IT major, I preferred to do MBA, as I was looking at a career something above coding. I realized that I should have got some prior experience working, before doing MBA. Now, I am working with an IT Major in SCM consulting and am not satisfied with what I am doing. I am planning to do a Specialized course in SCM and came across MIT’s MLOG program.

1. I have 2.5 years of work experience in IT consulting in SCM. Will that meet the expectations at MIT for this program?
2. What is the ROI considering I make it up to this program?
3. As MIT academic fees are a bit high, can we get any financial aid? (Have checked the website, but found the data to be for the past year) Can you provide inputs regarding this?
4. What about jobs post this program? What kinda profiles come up for grabs? (I don’t want to get into ‘routine’ prevailing in IT industry. Want to dirty my hands with some real SCM stuff)
5. If we cant find a job of our choice, what other options do we have post this program? (Spending that much for the course, I am looking at a better, challenging and repaying career ahead)

I’ve got Rich Cross-functional experience in Business Analysis & Solutioning, Product Development and Project Execution – with Expertise in Supply-Chain, CRM, Dealer Management System, CRM, Sales and Distribution and Loyalty Modules of various ERPs.

P.S: A Distinction student all through my academics and a very prolific member in lot of EC activities throughout.

Rohit, we do not break up average GMAT scores per country. I encourage you to apply with your score.

Vivek, our average work experience is 5 years. However, we admit students with less experience as well.

Students do receive fellowships as well as financial aid. Next year's tuition is not released yet.
