Dear Sridhar,
Like everyone, there are pros and cons in your profile. Lets analyze them a little deeper:
- The first big hurdle is the GMAT. Given that your profile otherwise looks good, this is the one thing that you should give serious thought to (and I know you would have done that already, but push harder). With this score, you are starting with a huge handicap - so if you feel you can do better, I would strongly advise you to retake and better the score.
- While the experience as an entrepreneur is always good, but the need for an MBA and the short-term goal are not clear in your case. You need to think harder as that will be the biggest scrutiny point for adcoms given the fact that your startup seems to be doing reasonably well
- Bear in mind that the UG ECs are some way back in time and use them sparingly in your essays.
- For the school selection, I will point you to our in-house MAP process which is designed to exactly the questions playing in your head regarding school-profile fit. https://www.mbacrystalball.com/mba-profile-evaluation

Dear Sam11,
You seem to have some very adventurous experiences under your belt. While that's a good thing, the challenge will be to structure all this into a coherent story. Read on for more:
- First question, why yes, you should definitely go for the R2 deadline. But you will need to ensure that you can take out sufficient time from work as you are starting a little late in the day and will need dedicated effort
- The challenge hinted above will be to really tie-in your early life experience with what you are doing today and how that has helped you differentiate yourself as a consultant.
- Think also about the rationale behind defending what you know about front end consulting and why is that the right next step for you. This should be fairly simple in your case I think

Here is a brief overview of my profile. I would appreciate if anyone can comment on the chances.
GMAT-690
12th- 88%
BE- 64%
Work Ex-
2 years in IT- typical IT profile.
1 year with UBS in US- Core Investment Banking
Summer course in Columbia University- A grade
For the past two years I have been working as a freelance trader. My goal is to run a hedge fund. I started independent trading keeping this aim in mind. But this has not been a successful venture so far.
Extra curricular- played cricked for college at zonal level.
My first question is- does success or a failure of the proposed venture matter as far as the application is concerned.
My expectation from MBA is to get a job in a financial firm in trading and then start a hedge fund of my own.
How can I differentiate myself in the application as most of the stuff is still unclear.
Does my profile stand a chance for ISB in 2nd round.

Im applying for ISB R2.. GMAT 700 ..work ex 4.5 years as operations managr in Tata Steel. I need some advice regarding the goals essay.
Presently im mostly into managing daily operations from a purely technical view point, mnapower mgmt and training, production planning and crisis mgmt. I want to migrate to a higher level of mgmt like General manager of VP inthe long term in the manufacturng sector itself.
But I dont know how tofit this into my goals essay... should i call it strategic leadership or general management (or something else). What are the oppurtunities if any in these types of profiles after ISB?
Also, ive talked my frnds inISB and theytold me about global leadership programmes offered by companies like Adita Birla. WHat is ptofile of these jobs?

Dear Vinayn,
There are some very interesting elements in your profile, but you have to be quite sure of the school choice and your career aspirations. Here's why:
- The transition from IT to i-banking to entrepreneurship is very interesting. If the story is told in the right way, this itself could be a winning formula
- In most cases, a successful venture negates the need for an MBA - though not a necessary condition. Having said that, it is important to bring out strongly what you learnt from the failure, and how potentially an MBA will help you cover that blind spot
- Last I knew, there are very few trading jobs on offer at ISB. Starting a hedge fund in India still is a distant reality. These are the two things that will be the biggest red points in your application for ISB. If you've done the research and are confident that you'll be able to make the most of 1-2 trading opportunities at the school, then it could still make sense though. Just to mix things up a bit, I would suggest applying to a few other international bschools too
Hope this helps put things in perspective
Cheers,
MG

Thanks for the amazing initiative.
I am currently based in USA and plan to move to India.
I am working in a semiconductor IC company here for the last 6 years. My background is in R&D design/project management.
I applied for an mba both at IIMA PGPX (admit) and ISB (admit) as I felt it would be a right step for me going forward. Looking at my options in India, in particular post-mba, I believe management consulting is one avenue I am very interested in.
Would it be possible for you to comment on pros and cons for the 2 programs and which 1 would suit me as an avenue for this transition. Since my work exp is on higher side of ISB batch and lower side of PGPX batch, I am confused on the direction.
I hear that I might be have to start from a close-to-entry level position which I am open to. I want to join the program which fits my profile better and gives me a better chance at this transition.
thanks
sriram

I was wondering how important is AWA when applying for ISB. The reason I am asking is because I got 4 in AWA ( GMAT - 700; Q-50, V-35). Will my AWA score come back to haunt me while applying ?
Thanks,
Adi

Adi,
Instead of giving a very detailed response, the answer is what might sound as an "official" response but its true. The GMAT is one of the criterion that the school looks at - so if you show through your essays and the nature of your work that analytical reasoning and communications skills are not an issue, the score will be fine.
That said, yes, ISB does have a high GMAT average and you will need to make sure that the other aspects of the application make up for this apparent not so strong point in your profile.
Cheers,
MG
