Dear chaleizone,
I see that you've posted the same query in 5 different threads. This usually proves counterproductive as you may end up more confused with multiple inputs. A target query is usually more helpful.
Nonetheless, on your question, the IIMs and ISB 1 yr courses are extremely competitive when it comes to the GMAT score and all have an average score of above 700. As you may know, GMAT is only one of the criteria so it is difficult to prescribe a target. A low GMAT does not necessarily means low chances - and if your work-ex is strong, you may still be able to create a convincing story. Likewise, a strong GMAT does not guarantee anything.
This may be a bit generic as a response, but given the information, this is the best we could do to help.
Cheers,

Dear Sam,
Here are a few points to ponder for you:
- Let me start by stating the obvious. The GMAT score is one of the aspects that you'll have to work hard and overcome. Given that this was your 2nd attempt, assuming you have no plans for a retake. In light of this, think of what can you show and talk about from your work experience that'll overcome this aspect.
- Your work-ex will be on the lower side - the things working in your favor could be your educational pedigree. But the quality of work-ex will be extremely important to showcase in the correct light. Think of evidences of early leadership, team working etc.
- Another way to overcome the above two points is through your recommendations. If you get good, descriptive recos from senior management people, it will help your chances
Hope this helps

However, the question i really wanted to know is about the next step.
* Should I go ahead and apply to schools with this score, assuming I get good recos from management (which I do expect).
* Else should I give GMAT another shot with an eye on improvement and getting to the other side of 700. The main concern I have here is that this is going to be my third attempt at GMAT. Would it hurt my chances with Adcom the fact that I have tried thrice for a good GMAT.
* My score is already low. So, the real take is a 670 score or 3 attempts at GMAT (assuming I do make an improvement.)
Appreciate you help on this.
Thanks

Thanks for being specific.
The GMAT retake question really depends on whether you believe that score is an incorrect reflection of your skills or not. If not, then you should definitely go for another round.
The point is that you are likely to be working with multiple challenges here and those will pull down the probability of an admit. Not impossible, but difficult.
In short, 1-2 years of additional work-ex or a better GMAT or both will definitely help.

I just appeared for GMAT and got a score of 650; Verbal-31, Qunat-49.
I am BCom graduate and have also completed my CA, ICWA & CS. My academic record has been good consistently.
I have a post qulaification experience of 10+ years and currently working as AVP in a MNC in Finance Domain & handling a team of 6 people.
I am planning to my MBA from either ISB or IIM-A PGPX. Can you compare & contrast the two? Also should i apply with my current GMAT score or go for an improvement (not much scope although in quant due to my non-maths background, but may be in verbal)?
Awaiting your reply.

Hari Kamath

Dear Hari,
I believe you are talking about the next year's PGPX as the deadline for this year is already gone? A few things to bear in mind pertaining to the questions you raise
- Though audacious, but I'll try to put the two schools in a bit of perspective. The PGPX tends to attract people with substantially more work-ex than ISB - the work-ex average being 10yrs Vs 5yrs respectively. So you can surmise that the opportunities available at the respective schools will likely be more commiserate with those averages. Mind you the fallacies of averages - there are more than one exceptions to the generic statement here. But you get the drift I hope
- As mentioned on multiple responses here, the GMAT conundrum really depends on two factors. One, how well does your work-ex overcome a lot GMAT. And two, do you really believe you can score better. Answer these two and you can arrive at whether to go ahead with this score or not.
