Dear Praveen,
Not sure if its too late, but here are some reflections on your profile.
- You seem to have some pretty interesting aspects in the profile. It will be imperative to weave the story right though. The transition from recruitment consulting to management consulting is a good move but needs to tie in well with your future career aspirations. It is also not clear as to what type of management consulting role is this as a front-end analyst role usually does not involve things like SAS
- The GMAT and apparently conservative GPA are areas that you'd need to give some justification for given that you are in an analytically intense professional area
In absence of post-MBA aspirations, difficult to say more. Hope this helps.
Cheers,
MG

Basic demographic info:
33, Male, Indian
Educational Background:
Undergraduate degree from Anna University
major: Biotechnology, GPA 8.2/10
Ph.D. in Biotechnology from an US university. GPA: 3.339/4.
Ph.D. work resulted in one patent
Just started studying for GMAT and 'am planning to take the GMAT in April/May.
Work experience:
(all companies in US)
1. Post-doctoral research associate for 3 years. Co-Principal investigator of a $500,000 research grant awarded by National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. Postdoctoral research work resulted in one patent and was hired by a start up company to translate the research into a commercial product.
2. Worked in that start up for 2 years as a Research Engineer. Generated two more patents and one of them made 12% revenue for the company in FY'12. Co-Principal investigator in a $500,000 for another research grant awarded by the same institute.
3. Just got hired as Senior Engineer in another start up. Hired to translate research into commercial products. Leading a team of 2 and will also be responsible for fund raising in 6 months.
Extracurriculars:
Kung fu from 2005-2009. Treasurer and Co-ordinator of my Kung Fu club.
Habitat for Humanity Volunteer from 2006-2007, 2012-present
Collegiate level NCC (Similar to ROTC in the US, but since college did not pay my tuition I did not have to join the armed forces)
Won many city level quiz contests during my middle school and high school
Why MBA and Why ISB?
I want to return to India and start my company in India so I can take my research to the markets directly. Going to business school will help me understand how business decisions impact technology and vice-versa. I understand my field really well and having worked in start ups I know some financial modeling but I don't know enough corporate finance. Also, I don't understand Indian markets and the Indian business structure. I want to concentrate in Entrepreneurship and Finance during my time at ISB.
Long story short, 'am I pursuing a realistic dream? I will be 34 when I apply to ISB in Nov/December 2013. Will I be too old? Also, I know I can always get a 'better' GMAT score and GMAT is just 25% of the application, but what is the minimum score for me?

Dear MBA2015or2016,
Thanks for your query. Though a bit delayed, but here's the response to your predicament:
- From the contours of your profile, the 'dream' does sound quite realistic. Your overall story does have the ingredients for a perfect application
- Cliched as it may sound, there is no "minimum" GMAT. One way to think about GMAT is that below/above a certain threshold, it becomes a point to ponder for adcom. Anything in between is hygiene. In your case, anything above 700 will put the score in the hygiene bracket. That in no way means that if you score lesser, your chances are lower. But a good score always helps.
- At 34, you will definitely be on the higher side of the age/experience bracket and a bit of outlier. But you will not be an aberration. ISB does have folks in your age bracket. So if you are convinced about the value the school will add, age should not be a big consideration.
In summary, you need to be totally clear on how the school can fulfill your requirements and need to be able to articulate that well in your essays. With that, you should have a smooth ride.
Cheers,
MG

Dear Vivek,

Hi Sameer
I have a dilemma
I have an admit from ISB. An admit from SMU cox with 100% schol. Results pending of interviews with Oxford (said) , Mays, Mccombs, HEC Paris.
Which program be preferred over the other. I will be financing my MBA through 100% loan.
I am a computer engineer and have worked for 3.75 yrs with infosys as a test analyst in banking domain on finacle. Then I moved to oil exploration and was a wireline logging open hole field field engineer with Halliburton and worked in Texas US for 14 months and 1 month in Indonesia. I recently joined PwC as a consultant and am handling business development for oil and gas as well as an e governance project.
I am inclined towards marketing. Into brand management or luxury management directly or through management consulting companies.
Even the media industry fascinates me.
Guide me through this.

Congrats Rahul. Always good (and confusing) to have --> multiple MBA admits.

As you have more US schools in your list, I'd have normally assumed that you prefer working in the US.
In that case (and in the absence of the rest of the facts that you shared), I'd have prioritised the list as follows: McCombs, Mays, Cox.
Rahul9 wrote:have worked for 3.75 yrs with infosys ...moved to oil exploration
how did you manage that career shift (from technology to oil & gas)?
Rahul9 wrote:I recently joined PwC as a consultant and am handling business development for oil and gas as well as an e governance project.
This is probably what helped you on the differentiation side during MBA applications. However the next part takes the story beyond it's natural progression.

Neither of these industries is aligned with what you have done so far. Your best bet is to start moving towards the hubs for these domains - New York, London or Paris.
Now with these new inputs, my list changes to HEC Paris (in the fashion capital of many luxury brands), Oxford (close to London), then the US schools.

Hi sameer
Thanks for your inputs.
Doesn't cox Ho ahead of mays due to 100 percent schol if we do the trade off. ?
Can ISB help in my career shift to marketing?
If we forget about luxury management.
And just talk about brand management and marketing and business development. Does the list still remain the same.
Big question ISB or Oxford??
2. I ain't inclined to any country. I would anyday prefer a great package in ncr region than NYC.
3. If answer to question 1 is Oxford. Does Oxford enjoy the same brand image as ISB in India and Dubai. As the countries close to India is my next target after India.
In the long run I would prefer to settle down in India. Just the standard of loving should be great.
