AKK wrote:Hi,

I am 24, a fresh Chartered Accountant and plan to do MBA in the future. I intend to pursue a career in corporate/strategic consultancy. I need your help with the following:

1. At what position should I apply at these firms?
2. Should I first get some experience with a startup/ corporate job before applying for a job at consulting ?
3. Any other inputs you feel are helpful.

Hope to hear from you soon!!

Thanks a lot for the initiative

AKK,

Not clear what kind of firms you have in mind, but most management/strategy consulting firms rarely hire CAs without an MBA degree - unless you join some corporate finance kind of practice in some of these firms. So first identify the groups/verticals within these firms that do hire fresh CAs.

Most of these firms also do not hire lateral - so the startup/job thing isn't a great idea.

Hope this helps some.

Cheers,

Business schools providing MiM programs for spring 2017 and Application Deadlines?
Suggested schools which i should apply to in US according to my profile?
Hi Jashan,

Here's a list of the best Masters in Management (MiM) Programs. You can use it as the starting point to find out about the fees, starting dates etc.

Programs like IE and HEC possibly have spring intake, but it's best that you verify that from their official site.

If you have the opportunity to get the GMAT score higher that would've helped. As MiM programs accept students with lower (often nil) experience, there's not much in a profile that can be leveraged apart from things like the GMAT score. Is there a way you can go higher?

The event management venture that you've talked about seems interesting. In the MiM SoP that you submit, ensure that you explain well about the scope, scale and your role in it.

2 years as a Software engineer, Planned to give the Gmat this fall, and getting 650 ish in mocks

I spent most of my time coding and providing clientele support.
My wish for doing an Mba is to change track and work at Audio companies like Etymotic, Shure, Audio Technica etc. My passion, being the audiophile I am, is to understand the market of the audiophiles domain and the average listener, very much curious and interested about the market related with sound production management and how the business is done and how it can be thrived.

So, I am wondering should I keep on working, as I have pretty less exp relative to other applicants or should I go for an MIM? Or do MBA colleges even 'consider' applicants like me? If not, then I am willing to create a start up when I acquire the necessary funds.
Here are some thoughts for you to think about.

That's a very niche market you are targetting. The MBA / MiM will help you gain a general awareness of marketing, but not as it applies to audio companies.

Your next employer will expect some hands on experience in the domain you are planning to enter.

Between the MBA and MiM, I'd say go for the MBA, as you have 2 years experience now, and will have 3 by the start of the program.

On the profile side, the experience as well as the expected GMAT would be on the lower side. It's ok to wait for a year more, if you can get the GMAT score you need to build a competitive profile.

What is it that you do in your current role? Apart from coding, does it have any business analysis or client facing exposure?

B.Com, 0 yrs experience, Interested in MS FINANCE FULL TIME

- Is it ok to apply for Fall 2016 to the US universities who accept international applications (as per their websites) for Fall.? Is the acceptance ratio low? or lesser scholarships than spring?

- I am aware about the 12+4 year criteria and I personally wrote to some universities if they accept 12+3, and the reply was positive. So am I on the right track for taking the GRE TOEFL around May 2016?

- In terms of work-ex I am pursuing small internships, some may not be able to provide a certificate, will it be okay? I can describe my work.

- last but not the least, I am taking online certified courses related to Finance and basics from Coursera provided by top universities. They are non-credit courses but will i get an edge once I apply?
Applying for the Fall intake is better and more common. Spring intakes have certain limitations (course choice, TA/RA opportunities, forming project teams, jobs etc) compared to the Fall intake that has started earlier. Start early, if you want to be considered for financial aid.

Assuming you aren't targeting programs starting in Fall 2016, it's fine to apply to programs that have given you an encouraging response.

Sure, ensure that your description gives them enough comfort and credibility.

It won't be a game changer, but still better than going in with no finance exposure.

Full Time MIS program from USA

1.What is my scope of getting admission in top 15 colleges of USA for MIS?
2. What will be average cost of expenditure?
Let's tackle the easy question first. Here's how much MS programs cost (on average) in the US.

Each university will have its own set of expenses and costs. The elite ones are far more expensive than the average depicted here. So do check out the specific programs as well.

When's the GRE scheduled? If you can, try to go higher than the estimated score you've shared, since that plays a big role in MS applications and most applicants have lesser experience than you do.

Which brings up the next question.

Why are you targeting MS in MIS at this stage of your career, when most peers would be looking at ways to get out of technical roles and into the management cadre? Is it just for cost reasons or something else (like a passion to be in the field for the next 10 years)?

Hi for a b-school in India(which accepts both scores), which carries more weightage; GMAT or CAT? is it true that aspirants who would like to enter Indian b-schools through GMAT should have more work experience and higher score than their CAT counterparts?

Thanks

We don't focus on CAT programs, Ankshuman. So, we don't have an answer to that query.

However for GMAT programs that accept GRE, here's an anamoly that we've observed --> Average GRE scores for MBA programs.

Thanks for the reply. Can you however reply to the second part of the question?
I have checked out the link on your answer. It contains avg GMAT scores of US universities. Can you send the same of Indian universities?

It would've helped to know which bschools you are referring to.

In India, we only focus on 1-year MBA programs like those offered by ISB and IIM. And the average work experience in the class ranges from 5 years (at ISB) to 10 years (IIMs).

We don't know about the requirements for traditional 2 year Indian programs that accept CAT scores, since that is not our focus.

I would like you guide me as which would suit me more MS/MBA .I would like to be evaluated on it as well as what kind of a profile is required to pursue education in good colleges.I also have a query that for applying in ISB what kind of a profile is required and which would would be better M.S/ISB as I plan to do best in career.
MS would be better suited with your current experience level. However, for the good programs your GRE will have to be higher.

For ISB, here's how the process works: https://www.mbacrystalball.com/blog/2014 ... n-process/

But it'll be too early for you.
