MS/MBA from US (Old discussion new person)
Post by kunalk » September 21st, 2014, 11:38 am
I am an MBA finance graduate (Banking major) with 6 year+ post MBA experience (MBA from a Tier 1 Indian Institute) and another 4 year pre-MBA IT Industry experience (Engineering background).
I have been contemplating plans to pursue a Master’s degree in finance from the US for the last 6 months now. I have already given my GMAT (610 - Q-47 V-27), Undergrad GPA 3.0+ and have written the IELTS (Result awaited).
Over the last 6 months I have visited numerous US college websites, written to more than 15 of them inquiring of their MS finance courses. Most of them have advised me take up their MBA program as my experience of 10 years would not suit their cohort. Only a couple of them have written back positively (have not shared my scores with any of the colleges yet)
There reason for doing a Masters in Finance is to build on my core finance skill which were missing in the MBA course I had taken 6 year back, or has been lost over the last 6 years of working on the business finance side.
I believe that doing a second MBA will move me further down the generalist path which may or may not add value to my existing profile.
I am also planning to take the MBA MAP program from MBA Crystal Ball, but I believe this would be more useful for candidates thinking of going for their MBA than MS (Please advise if that is a wrong assumption)?
I am looking for some help here, to help me decide quickly what would be a better option for me:
1. MS Finance
2. MBA Finance (2nd MBA)
3. Re-take GMAT for better score (but in view of which course/courses??)
Would love to hear back from the Team or Members
Regards
Kunal

I am into my second year of job, and hope this to be the last before embarking on my journey into another academic curriculum.
As you can guess, the cause of my mailing you, and need to pursue the MIM program, is a wish to go international, a broader network, getting into the management diaspora of jobs and of course, stay in Europe.
Right now I am preparing for my GMAT exams(self-preparation). I am aiming to join the 2015-2016 fall classes in one of the top 10 colleges in Europe. Since I am from an architecture background, the quantitative aspect of the exam is a bit tough for me than the engineering or accounts aspirants, for which I have started quite early. I am writing this mail for clearing up doubts regarding :
-Do you think, I would be suited for the program, and given my academic and job background, would the admission directors show any interest in me?
-Since I want to master the management area of an organisation, I want to start from the beginning of a course, for which MIM seems much better option than MBA, but, are there enough jobs for MIM pass outs in Europe (and what if I am not fluent in an European Language)?
-I really want to know, what my chances would be. I mean, I have looked around a lot, and come to know about what the colleges look for, but in reality, how hard is it, to get into the list of the selected few students.
-Am aiming for the top 10 colleges, and want to work in The Netherlands in my future. But the Rotterdam School of Management asks for students with finance or business backgrounds, and they also provide a 1 year course, which I think would be accelerated, and won’t give me ample time to sit, and understand things slowly, and deeply. On that note(taking into account the possibility of getting job in the country and sustainability, which other colleges do you suggest?
-Once my GMAT is done, I would like to take your help regarding the application process and all. Do you provide services to MIM aspirants?
I know, I have put many questions, and it could be of a lot of time investment from your side to reply to my plethora of queries. But I am in real need of help. I have read about the team, and the reviews, all saying, it’s there to help, not to allure you into something that you don’t need and is not useful for you.
I would be highly obliged to the team, if you guys can help me out of this stuck situation. And am a bit scared too, because, seeing the limited number of seats available for the top 10 MIM programs, it kind of makes me more prompt to know where I stand in the crowd.
With this, I wrap up. Expecting a help hand.
My Particulars:
X Board Exam : 86% (West Bengal Board)
XII Board Exam : 67% (CBSE) (Bit of a let down)
CGPA in College (5 year Architecture Course) : 7.0
Work Exp. : Into 15th month of my job, by the time I apply, it would be 24 months.
Currently a registered member of Council Of Architecture (COA).
Other architectural certifications achieved during my course.

Not necessarily, Kunal. The MBA syllabus may not be as focussed as the MS curriculum, but nothing stops you from targetting niche roles after graduation.
A lot will depend on the skills that you already have.
Right assumption, as far as the MAP report goes. The comprehensive database we use has MBA bschool information.kunalk wrote:I am also planning to take the MBA MAP program from MBA Crystal Ball, but I believe this would be more useful for candidates thinking of going for their MBA than MS (Please advise if that is a wrong assumption)?
If most of the MS Finance programs have already discouraged you from applying, then the MBA is the only option.kunalk wrote:I am looking for some help here, to help me decide quickly what would be a better option for me:

Either ways, you'd have to re-take the GMAT, if you want to target the good MBA colleges.
We are currently working with a few folks with a top MBA from India (IIMs) and in lucrative jobs (Investment banking and M&A) who are applying for their second MBA. Their focus is pretty clear and the GMAT score is high. That helps.

You'll surely get their attention as they don't have too many Indian architects applying from India.subherr wrote:I am currently working with Larsen & Toubro, a senior architect.

But you'd also have to clearly tell them why you want the degree and what you plan to do after graduating. Think about your career plan independently and don't assume you'll get your answers after starting the program.
Read this post on: MBA vs Masters in Management: Which is better?subherr wrote:-Since I want to master the management area of an organisation, I want to start from the beginning of a course, for which MIM seems much better option than MBA, but, are there enough jobs for MIM pass outs in Europe (and what if I am not fluent in an European Language)?
Jobs for international students are a little difficult to come by.
Language will be an issue if you get into a company and role that has a high degree of interfacing with locals.
We do this for MBA programs, but I'm afraid for MS and MiM programs we don't have enough data to really do a statistical evaluation of chances.subherr wrote:-I really want to know, what my chances would be. I mean, I have looked around a lot, and come to know about what the colleges look for, but in reality, how hard is it, to get into the list of the selected few students.
Shorter programs are tough because you'd be juggling too many things in and it's tough to do justice to all of them.subherr wrote:-Am aiming for the top 10 colleges, and want to work in The Netherlands in my future.
We interviewed the RSM Admissions Officer. Though it's focussed on the MBA program, you may get some insights into the general opportunities and challenges in the region.
Here's the link: RSM MBA Rotterdam Interview with Admissions Director
We won't be able to recommend MiM programs, but we'd be able to help with SoP/Essay/Reco/Resume reviews and editing.subherr wrote:-Once my GMAT is done, I would like to take your help regarding the application process and all. Do you provide services to MIM aspirants?

Given my nature of interests and proficiencies, I intend to switch into Management Consulting.
I am a Computer Engineer (2013 passout) from Mumbai University with 63% (First Class). I also have 13 months of work ex as a Tech Consultant (CRM implementation) in an IT firm in Mumbai.
Presently I work in my family business for 4 months to date with more responsibilities. The business mainly involves procuring tenders and implementing the work involved. The work comprise of manpower outsourcing, building maintainance and management related assignment. So my role is more liasoning based and getting the the job done from people through coordination.
My 10th % is 82 (SSC Board) and 12th % is 74.5
I took my GRE last month with a score of 317 (Q167, V150, AWA 3.5).
Given my circumstances I have to apply for fall 15. Thus I don't stand a chance to go for an mba from a top school given my acads and low work ex (2years).
My goal is to work in management related environments for a sizable amount of time and then implement my learning's in taking my family business to the next level or in a different direction altogether.
I am looking for programs from where top Management Consulting firms like MBB recruit from. So far I have narrowed down to 3 top programs (please do tell if I missed any).
1. Masters in Management Information Systems (from Kelley business school, indiana,TAMU and CMU)
2. Masters in Management Science and Engineering (From Duke, Stanford, Dartmouth, Columbia and Cornell)
3. Masters in Management (Univ of Michigan, USA AND Some European schools like ESADE, ESCP, EDHEC and so on)
I would be grateful if you could guide me in how do I proceed with my goal in mind.

Mohit, the question about what to do next is quite generic (which is why in the email, I had suggested asking something specific ).
You've got names spread across geographies where the work culture and visa regime are very different.
As a general approach, don't depend on what's mentioned on the websites.
Start reaching out to folks from the programs you have targetted and ask them to share their personal experiences.
Ask them for specific numbers and profiles of students who've been recruited by the top consulting firms.
Learn more about how consulting firms work and recruit. You'll be better prepared for the day when you are face to face with the recruiting team from these firms.
Put in solid applications, preferably in the earlier rounds

I am posting my stats over here for an evaluation from your side for the range of schools both in US and UK where I may be competitive for a Masters degree in Finance. My targets are top schools in the US and in the UK. However I would like you to guide me in choosing the appropriate " realistic schools" and if possible advise on the mitigating factors for attaining so.
Also I would like to point out that I have just started working so you could probably evaluate without the work ex part although rest assured I am trying mighty hard to put my work ex at credible standings. I plan to apply to the schools after 1 or 2 years of work exp.
As you can see below there is a rough 1.5 year gap after my graduation although this time was used to pursue something which would help me with respect to my long term goal in finance field.
Long Term goal: To start my own firm in Financial services.( Either in Dubai or India )
My Brief Stats are as follows:
UG: Btech NIT Calicut( Tier 2 Engineering College India ), GPA: 6.95/10, Highest GPA was 8.8/10, Class rank: 17/42, No of Distinctions in class( GPA 8 and above): 8
GMAT, GRE: Yet to give I am contemplating something around 700 or 720.
Actually my story goes as follows..
Before entering college I had to drop a year during my 11th grade because my dad got a transfer to a different part of the country & after completing my 12th grade I again took a year off for the purpose of coaching myself for the prestigious IITJEE exam. Thus as you can seen I was about 20 years old when I entered college.
I graduated from a tier 2 Engineering college in India ( NIT), however I had serious health issues during my first year of college and hence i couldn't attend classes for half of the semester..( I received 7 F grades because of this..).I had a medical treatment from a pediatrician who advised me some period of rest before returning to college, hence I can provide some reasoning for this in my Essays as well as in some recommendation letters from some of my professors who know me quite well. Towards the end of my college I had began to do a bit of financial modelling and with sufficient interest I had taken up my final year thesis with a professor of my college for a financial modelling and optimization project.
I became interested in this field and again took up another 2 finance project under the same professor, all based on higher degrees of financial modelling and optimization ( He is now an Assistant Professor at IIM Indore). Since I needed time to put myself into this track I had to devote near to around 8 months solely for making out these thesis and subsequently publishing them into an International Finance Journal. These 3 projects have now been published.. Very Happy I have plans also to present them in a national or an international conference.
After 8 months of research in finance i decided to spend some time in doing social cause work and for around another 7 months was actively working for 3 to 4 NGOs( 1 international and the rest having offices abroad) in the field of Child rights, Environment protection etc..helping them with fundraising and campaigning. I was also subsequently offered to become a campus ambassador for a micro finance NGO in helping them find investors for the firms operations.( I am presently doing this apart from my full time work.
Most of the NGO work had specific outputs such has raising huge funds, roping in large no of investors, raising awareness on child rights to a larger section of the society etc.
Also the entire episode with the NGO's helped me realize and attain interpersonal skills such as pitching, managing investors etc.. which i am sure has incorporated itself into my work skills.
Thus after 1.5 years after graduation I joined for a job in Dubai at a reputed I bank.
Along the way I have taken CFA level 1 and 2 and FRM level 1 and 2 as well. Also I am planning to take up GRE Math ( apart from GMAT) as well some UC Berkeley extension courses to help rectify my academics.
Can you tell me whether I can make a shot to the top schools in UK & US ( read LSE, LBS,Said,Boston..etc) with this profile for MS in Finance or what steps are required for the same.
Hope you can help me out.

You could try to address the 1.5 year gap (due to transfer, test prep, health issues) in the application. But with an assumed GMAT score + no experience, it becomes a hypothetical discussion.jayaramgokul wrote:I am posting my stats over here for an evaluation from your side for the range of schools both in US and UK where I may be competitive for a Masters degree in Finance.
Also, for non-MBA programs, we can't help with chances. We do that for MBA programs where we have a lot of data that we can statistically analyse.
I'm afraid there's not much that we can suggest at this time.

I gave my gre exam and got a score of va 143 and qa 157. total being 300. Now im applying for a phd in finance in mba college like hec paris, essec and the likes.
Now as i understand this is a very low score on my part but do you think it will make sense to apply in this case. actually in my case i can postpone my admission as the some school have 2nd application round so that i can write gre again.
but there are this school iese that has last date on 10th jan so im in a fix.
Also bocconi has an early application date, and i want to apply for that too.
do you think i should apply with such a low score to iese at all?
Also do you think it is advisable to write gmat than gre?
i understand that overall application is considered in totality but still i had to ask.
thanking in anticipation!
