I have a keen interest to pursue a career in academics and would like to do FPM from one of the top 3 IIMs (A,B,C).My profile is as follows:
1) B.Tech -Textile - NIT Jalandhar
2) Started my career in sales and marketing and worked for 1.5 yrs with Hawkins - sales officer and then for Honda Motorcycles - 1.5 years - Area Manager - Haryana.
3) Did my post graduate diploma in retail management from MICA ( since then I am deeply interested in retail marketing)
4) Working since last seven years as sales manager with an auto retail giant in Gulf.
I am currently 33 and would like to give CAT 2014 as a first step towards FPM. My queries are as follows:
1) What is the CAT cut off for FPM and what are the other parameters of selection process?
2) How competitive is the admission - I mean a broad idea of the candidates who consider FPM.
2) I would like to pursue a research in emerging retail formats. Will my retail sales experience lend me some weightage in application process
3) I have presented papers in contest like AMAETHON - IIM A, but no publication so far.
If i cant make into FPM what are other options to do Phd in marketing in India.
Plz advise.
Vikrant

WHAT BEFORE MBA ??
Post by Aditya_GMAT » August 30th, 2013, 3:39 pm
I have registered myself on your forum, but the problem, i couldn't find where to post, so i am writing it here :
Dear Readers
Inspired by the quality posts on this forum, I am posting my post on " WHAT BEFORE MBA ?? ".I expect all my readers to send in high quality comments and suggestions. Thank you.
I am a 4th year undergraduate student of Electronics and Tele-Communication Engineering at a reputed university(BESU) of West-Bengal. I also have a PG degree (all 10 papers cleared, certificate to be received after graduation) diploma in Advance Computer Applications(Specialization in Software Engineering) from NIELIT, New Delhi.
Well, I don't want to continue with my engineering degree, and I want to switch over to Business and Management studies, and I want to pursue a career in Investment Banking or Management Consultant in some reputed US firms.
The biggest hurdle is Job-experience ! Most US based (top and middle rung B- schools) universities demand a prior 3-4 years work experience as a pre-requisite for their MBA. Well, that makes sense, but I am not ready to pursue a career in my engineering(No IT Company, No PSU ,please! they simply not my type) , so what now???
Well, after some research, I wish to do a one year PG course (through GMAT) like Masters in International Business(Hult business school, or anything better!, please suggest if you know any.), or Masters in Finance(Thunderbird, Cambridge,Duke, suggest if you know anything better than these) or Masters in Global Management/Marketing (Thunderbird anything better!, please suggest if you know any.)
And after gaining the required work-experience, I shall switch over to complete my one year MBA(through the same GMAT score, I shall use for admission in the PG courses). I am most importantly interested in Masters in Finance , for it will help me gain expertise in my dream domain, i.e, Investment Banking or Management Consultancy.
I know the present plans has quite a lot of pit-holes and some out of reality stuffs, But I want my readers to help me to sketch a perfect plan, for myself ( Also, I have just 1 year to execute everything, so please hurry and help me) ..........................
Also, if you know any more good PG courses in US universities, of similar interest, I shall be glad to hear it from you.
Extra suggestions, and some new career map, other than the one-mentioned(before MBA carrer map) are always welcomed and highly appreciated.
Yours
Aditya Kumar Roy

Robben bhai, apologies for not being able to focus on this thread.robben_bhai wrote:1. Take the loan, take the risk and go to LSE this year.
2. Start with a job (currently have 2 offers; one from TCS and one from another company, not paying too well, not an outstanding profile either) OR Apply off campus in Fall, in hopes of landing a good offer (Risky again); also side by side prepare for CAT'13.
3. Drop the year entirely, and focus ONLY on applications and studying for CAT'13.
Being a small team during the peak MBA admissions season has its downsides in terms of capacity and time management.
Coming to your profile, from your CAT and GMAT performance, you obviously are have the intellectual horsepower to do well in academic programs.
However, like you pointed out, there are risks in going abroad for any higher education. This is where having some real world skills can really help.
If you aren't sure yet, whether you need to spend so much money to go abroad, you should take your time and get some good experience in India.
Educational opportunities will always be there.

You are right. Calibre-wise, these don't figure in the top.AKJ_3007 wrote:1) shall I go for any of the master courses in uk? I am sceptical as they are not very highly reputed schools compared to others uk has to offer.
Getting into mainstream Mergers and Acquisitions roles is tough.AKJ_3007 wrote:2) I want to enter the line of merger and amalgamation and don't know how to enter that line.
There's a lot of competition. So some folks try to get into supporting roles hoping to transition into front office roles after a while.
At junior levels, you could get into the Transaction Advisory Services department of the big 4 (PwC, KPMG, E&Y, Deloitte).
I'd vote for that approach too.AKJ_3007 wrote:3) shall I gain some work experience first then apply for a MBA rather than going for a masters.
Here's how to make your profile irresistible to the top schools?AKJ_3007 wrote:4) if I start preparing my resume for a b school now what aspects should I aim enter into it? And how to go about it?
Undergrad grades are only a small component of what the best bschools in the world look for. Focus on getting a rounded profile and then give it a shot.AKJ_3007 wrote:5)does my educational background warrants me any chance in a good b school?

Karishma, we realise that there are a lot of good universities out there that offer excellent master courses.karishma wrote:I want to go for masters in international business/masters in management straight after my graduation.I am a little confused about the kind of colleges the i will be able to get into and also -whether this is the right course for me?
However, we feel it's too premature to jump into any management program before you have some real world experience.

Your profile is fine. But be aware that the Masters in Financial Engineering (MFE) course can be very technical.
So apart from what you've been doing with your family portfolio, get ready for a whole lot of statistical and programming related assignments.
Two important questions to ask yourself.
Are you ready for it? Will you enjoy it?

Start getting a few bullet points on your CV that have a good mix of research based work and preferably in an area that the translateral agencies such as IMF and Work Bank would appreciate.
And if you only have Harvard and MIT on your list, either work towards making those bullets points obscenely impressive...or spread out the risk by looking at other PhD programs that aren't as competitive.

MS or MBA after 10 years of Experience
Post by saurabh.cdac08 » September 20th, 2013, 8:05 pm
and its really good. My question revolves aroung this only and you may find it most common question.
I am an IT engineer and my total exp is 9 years (3 years in Teaching and 6 years as Software deloper in an MNC).
Now I feel that here in India there is not much growth in IT after 10-12 years and job is also not secure after this much exp.
So I thought of going for higher education. Now I am not sure whether to go for MS or MBA.
I have some questions like Is MS good after 10 years exp. I don't want to settle in US for long time but I really want to stay for some 2-3 years. Can Indian MBA give me a onsite chance 2 -3 years.
If I want secure and prgressive job in India after age of 40, what is more suitable for me.
Should I targer PGPX in IIms or MS in USA and staye there for 3-4 years. And what is the career progression in India after MS.
You have done both MS and MBA so I feel you are right person to guide me.
