Re: MS or MBA after 10 years of Experience

Glad you liked it, Saurabh. Share some of that love on the book review page please (Flipkart, Amazon or wherever you got the book from).saurabh.cdac08 wrote:I am confused about my higher study plans so thought of taking your suggestion.I have read the book "Beyond the MBA hype" and its really good.
saurabh.cdac08 wrote:I have some questions like Is MS good after 10 years exp.
If you want to push yourself deeper into the technical side, yes it can help. However, from what you've described you want to get away from it, right?
An Indian MBA won't give you onsite opportunities. Most of the onsite placements you see on Indian MBA sites are due to the contacts of the students.saurabh.cdac08 wrote:Can Indian MBA give me a onsite chance 2 -3 years.
The best option is to start building skills that have a longer 'shelf-life'. Which means getting into the business side of technology.saurabh.cdac08 wrote:If I want secure and prgressive job in India after age of 40, what is more suitable for me.
As you'd have read in Beyond The MBA Hype, I'd caution you against expecting too much out of either an MBA or an MS.saurabh.cdac08 wrote:Should I targer PGPX in IIms or MS in USA and staye there for 3-4 years. And what is the career progression in India after MS.
Neither of them will add clarity to your career goals. You need to have that clarity before you head for an expensive degree.
I don't have an MS degree, Saurabh. Just an MBA.saurabh.cdac08 wrote:You have done both MS and MBA so I feel you are right person to guide me.

Rajender, not sure how you'd define oomph for your career, but if you are raising your expectations too much, you need to be careful.2rajsri wrote:please advise me as to this course will help me

Part-time MBA, long-distance MBA and all its variations can't match the 'oomph' factor of full-time MBA.
So if you can't leave your job, and if you still want to understand concepts of business, then such programs are ok...as long as you don't expect major fireworks at the end of it.

When academics aren't your strong area, the next best thing to do is to build a professional track record that overshadows the not-so-impressive grades.2rajsri wrote:since i do not have solid education background will this not affect my growth?
Tell me specifically what you do at work and what are your strengths.2rajsri wrote:also, i need to know if u can guide me what else can be done given the fact i cant leave job
Maybe I can suggest some ideas for you to pursue for free (or at minimal cost).

Re: WHAT BEFORE MBA ??

Aditya, you posted this multiple times on different threads. Gets a little difficult to keep track of things that way. Seems like it slipped through the cracks.Aditya_GMAT wrote:Dear Sir,
I have registered myself on your forum, but the problem, i couldn't find where to post, so i am writing it here :
Aditya_GMAT wrote:I want to pursue a career in Investment Banking or Management Consultant in some reputed US firms.
These are two very disparate fields, requiring a unique set of skills and aptitude. You'll have to narrow it down to one.
You could target Indian MBA programs where work-experience isn't a deal breaker. Going abroad without experience is very risky.Aditya_GMAT wrote:Most US based (top and middle rung B- schools) universities demand a prior 3-4 years work experience as a pre-requisite for their MBA. Well, that makes sense, but I am not ready to pursue a career in my engineering(No IT Company, No PSU ,please! they simply not my type) , so what now???
There's a huge difference in the quality and credibility of the courses you've listed. Be careful what you sign up for.Aditya_GMAT wrote:Well, after some research, I wish to do a one year PG course (through GMAT) like ...
I'm not convinced about this road-map. Jumping from one degree to another in quick succession is counter-productive.Aditya_GMAT wrote:And after gaining the required work-experience, I shall switch over to complete my one year MBA(through the same GMAT score, I shall use for admission in the PG courses).
You are relying too much on theoretical exposure rather than real world experience.
There is no 'perfect' plan, Aditya. And the last thing is to expect others to lay it down for you.Aditya_GMAT wrote:But I want my readers to help me to sketch a perfect plan, for myself ( Also, I have just 1 year to execute everything, so please hurry and help me)
Sorry for being a little hard on you in this response, but in your interest you should slow down and take a step back.
There's a lot that can be done in India itself. Going abroad isn't the solution, specially when there's so much uncertainty around the global economy, jobs etc.
Going to a mediocre university abroad will, in fact, make it more difficult for you to break into the super-competitive and pedigree hungry fields like management consulting and investment banking.

squenx wrote:got through the ESADE MBA for '14. Should I think about applying to other MBA colleges in the us? How would you rate ESADE?
Congrats, squenx. If that's the only option in hand and if you've made up your mind to start soon (as opposed to applying in the next season to higher ranked programs), then the answer is quite straight-forward.
But if you are still thinking about US options, I'm guessing you want to work there. Between the two regions, the MBA degree is valued more in it's country of birth (i.e. USA).
So post-MBA jobs and career opportunities are more.

Hi Snehin,
Universities get a lot of profiles like yours, but with higher GMAT scores. So if your professional work experience has also been similar to what most tech professional talk about, there you'd face the same challenge of differentiation.
snehinarambhan wrote:Are these universities good ?
Tepper and Austin are better than the others for the specialisation you have in mind.
snehinarambhan wrote:Are there any other universities i could apply to for a Masters in Information Systems.
The bigger and stronger brands in this space are Stanford, MIT, Berkeley. But these would be long shots if you can't tackle the 'why I'm special' question.
