I have completed my B.Tech from a new private engineering college in Andhrapradesh in 2014 , now I am working in a top MNC as a associate software engineer. I am in dilemma whether to pursue MBA or not (from top institutes in India). I neither have enough outlook about corporate world or what qualities should an MBA aspirant should have but I have a burning desire to excel in career and start my own company someday, Will MBA help me in achieving this . I am an introvert from a rural area, as I heard does this make me unfit for MBA from top institutes in india. Will doing an MBA change my thinking process can i mould myself to be a good manager through mba ? Should i continue working for a couple of years before pursuing MBA if it can help me ? Please help me in getting to a conclusion .
Regards,
S R Kumar

I am a B.Tech Mechanical Engg. graduate from NIT, Nagpur (CGPA 8.06). I work in BPCL, Mumbai Refinery as an Inspection Engg. (with prior experience (1 yr.)of Purchase and Tenders dept.).
I am preparing for CAT this year. I scored 97 percentile in CAT, 2014. I am confused between two things and I need your help to help me judge them based on practical possibilities, available opportunities and other things. The choices are -
1) Pursue MBA in Marketing, spend some years in marketing jobs, then go for PhD in marketing in good US university and become a professor. (Is "some years in marketing jobs" good before PhD? Do they accept such candidates for PhD? Can I choose GMAT path to a US university and thereafter go for PhD?)
2) Or, choose GMAT for MBA? (I do not know how I'll pay the fees. What extra things should I do in the next three years to make sure my application gets me a scholarship?). Do the big oil giants like Shell, ExonnMobile (or other Non-Oil sector companies) recruit MBA candidates (with Oil industry b/g)? (Most people I saw were typical IT guy --> GMAT --> Financial (or any) Analyst in US )
I prefer the first (academic career) more but I do not know if that is practically possible. I haven't seen many people go for academic career as Marketing professors? That's why I kept the second option. I don't think CAT will take me to either of the above two. Please advice me, how can achieve either of them. Knowing that, I will be able to decide between the two.

I have 11+ years of experience in the IT industry in Management and Consulting(Solution Architect) roles in the ERP space. In next 2-3 years I want to move into Senior Management/Leadership roles in the IT industry itself.
Probably I can get there without an MBA as well, however I was thinking whether I can accelerate the process through the learning and network that I may build in a good B school and be more matured and well rounded with the management education, when I get into such a role.
Now there are two options I am considering,
1) A full time 1 year MBA from IIMA, IIMB or ISB.
2) An EMBA from ISB(PGPMAX) or the newer ones like the one from Insead in India(ILPSIE).
In the first option, the cost of the opportunity would be higher since I would have to forego a year of salary and add the course fee to the total cost. Also I would be 12+ years experienced and 36+ years of age when I start the course.
1) Would that be too old for a 1 year full time course in India?
2) Did the previous batches have profiles like mine? What kind of roles did they end up in after the completion of the course?
3) I saw the batch profiles for these programs. Most of the folks had around 9-11 years of experience. So am I over experienced for these courses and stand to lose out on a value of (say) couple of years of experience?
In the second option, I am not sure about the industry acceptance and leverage that I may get out of the course.
Will it help me with my medium term career goal?
What is your opinion of course like PGPMAX and ILPSIE for a profile like mine?
Any helpful response would be appreciated.
Regards,
Shatadip.

I am writing to seek career guidance as i am having a quarter life crisis.
My professional background-
I am 25 years old. I passed out in 2013 with Post Graduate Diploma In Management (equivalent to MBA) from a Tier 2 B-School after BBM. I started my career working as a Sales executive and worked for 5 months.
After this short stint i joined Amazon as a Vendor Support Associate (Operations support) and worked here for 1 year. Due to office politics and retaliation, i had to resign recently.
Till date i have 1.5 years of experience and my salary package is just 2.8 lacks PA.
My personal background-
* My father owns a small furniture trading business employing 8 people.
* Currently i don't have a job and i am not satisfied with the kind of profiles/companies/packages been offered.
* My quantitative ability is not strong and verbal ability is OK.
* My educational achievements were mediocre.
My query and career options-
1. Is it worthwhile to plan a 2nd MBA or Masters in Supply Chain Managment abroad considering my background and the stage of my career? I think a global MBA will help me progress fast in my career, experience new culture and gain a global perspective.
OR
2. Join my dad's business to revive and scale up.
OR
3. Take up online courses on sites like https://www.coursera.org or https://www.edx.org in order to expand my skill set and search for a better job.
I would request you to help me make this big career decision.
A response to this request would be appreciated.

I have gone through your website MBA Crystal Ball and must add that you and your team are doing a fabulous job in terms of guiding people in making the right decisions.
I am currently evaluating if a 2nd MBA at this stage of my career will be helpful.
I have over 12 years of experience in banking, significant part of which has been with a MNC Bank. I have been in the field of business development/relationship management throughout though I have been able to move across different verticals within the same business. While I have spent significant time in banking and specifically in SME banking, I have been wanting to make a shift in industry to tech-oriented industries i.e. start-ups in payments tech., digital marketing.tech cos., product start-ups etc. However, I find that i get type-casted as a banker and have not been able to make any progress. This has led me to believe that I would possibly need to re-invent the wheel and a second MBA could possibly help. I have done my 1st MBA from IIM though i have not been able to leverage this as well as I should have. I am 36 and a half years and have a family, though thankfully no loans. Considering these, what would your opinion on how helpful would a 2nd MBA be and should I be looking at Indian schools like IIMA/B PGPEX or ISB or overseas schools.
best regards,

A brief background about me:
I'm 30, female and live and work in Delhi. I currently work as a Senior Associate in a Real Estate Private Equity fund (4 years).
Prior to this I was into Real Estate Consulting with an International Property Consultant (2.6 years). I started my career with a KPO and was into financial analysis involving CMBS (2 years).
I have about 9 years of work ex.
Qualifications: BA Economics (Hons) Delhi University and a CFA charter.
I'm seriously considering an MBA since I'm looking to transition out of the Analyst/Associate roles I'm currently getting and into senior/managerial positions. I want to know what kind of schools in the US/Singapore I should apply to, given my profile. I also have a low score in my 3rd year graduation and I guess I'm older than the average MBA candidate, which I would need to make up for with a good GMAT score and a compelling essay.
I'm fairly new to this, so I would really appreciate any feedback/advice on how to take this forward.
Thanks.

Hope you are doing well. I am writing to you with high hopes of receiving much needed guidance. It may be another long e-mail for you...but this is my struggle from the last 4 years..I hope you are able to take out some time and provide me with some guidance using your experience.
I have been been a good student academically and never minded studying. I took PCMB in my 12th grade due to my love for Biology in particular (even though I was never clear with what I really would like to pursue later). Because of the lack of guidance, I never really took medical entrance preparation seriously and ended up taking admission in a usual BSc Life Sciences at Hansraj College, University of Delhi. I received a gold medal and topped university of Delhi in my course. As you must be aware about the research infrastructure in India, a BSc holder has no chance of joining a reputed lab for a research based job..which meant that I was not going to get any on the job experience prior to deciding on my Masters. I took up a random customer care executive job at Naukri.com and started applying to colleges in UK alongside (US demanded 4 years of undergrad education and I did not think of the long-term at that point). Also, because I had done really well in studies, my family had high hopes from me.
I took admission in MSc Biomolecular Technology course in UK as it was giving me 50% scholarship and also because getting a scholarship from a UK university itself wasn't a joke. I went there..completed my strenuous one year course and scored distinction (highest in my course but they do not really care). Unlike most of my Indian batchmates who came back straight after finishing study OR after 3 to 4 month job search, I decided not to be back before getting some work experience. I got an internship where I did my industrial placement and managed to somehow work in 2 companies (2.5 years in all) before actually heading back to India ( honestly, I was home-sick and I stopped applying to positions, and also, visa became a constraint. Again, not being so clear with what I wanted with my career and no flexibility due to visa issues was making things worst).
Here I was back In India (2014 February)...had mixed feelings....thought things will get better. It took me 5 months to get a job with GlaxoSmithKline based in Bangalore as a Scientific Writer...I missed home..profile was too boring...and being in India and not being able to be with family was making me feel useless...low salary on top...I decided to apply elsewhere. In India, having a gap in your resume is a bigger issue as told by my sister. I am now working as a Business Analyst in the Life Science and Healthcare department of a KPO (Evalueserve) since last 7+ months.
Few realizations:
I do not like corporate culture, all the buttering, people being bossy and annoying
I enjoyed University and studying more
I like fast paced jobs more than boring slow paced lab based roles
Career Test Insights that match my own thinking:
I have always wanted to be in a customer facing role whereby I am able to assist, care or guide someone (for day profiles like a counsellor, teacher, trainer, dietician etc.). I like to provide tangible solutions to people and get immense satisfaction to see my customers happy...I have started thinking in terms of a consumer insight, FMCG sector kind of a role...market research or brand management..but pharma sector does not appeal me anymore...I do not know how to get out of this place...It feels as if I am stuck in a wrong career...
I have heard a lot from my sister too...i am wasting all my potential by hopping profiles (started as a scientist..then Quality Assurance Officer...then Scientific Writer and now a Business Analyst and still not happy???)) It seems I don't feel happy or I am in a very wrong field. Infact , I did a part-time customer assistant Christmas job for 3 months and enjoyed it more...
I am already 26+ and still so undecided with the direction of my career..sometimes I feel academia is where I should be but then I do not want to continue in research..how can I do a PhD?? I want to change my subjects...shall I do MBA?? Isn't it too general? So much money goes in..is there a guaranteed ROI if I give GMAT??
As I wish to go back abroad..shall I focus on job hunt rather than wasting my time thinking? Or just start preparing for MBA? (I am already a Masters)....Can I change my field using a phD? as I want a non-lab career..can I not teach in B schools if I do a phD in business relate subject like market analytics or brand communication?? (I think I am a ESFJ or ISFJ from Myerr Briggs Test)
MBA?? OR......phD in an unrelated field??? but who will give me that..am i really interested or is it just a means to go out of India? it will allow me to teach but is research my cup of tea?? OR....I look for some other option? healthcare IT or public health??
Money is a constraint in my case now...I am in desperate need of some counselling and direction in my life. Please help me in finding a direction...something that doesn't turn out to be a complete failure...I want to utilize my skills and do best in what I am interested in...
Looking forward to your reply.
Thank you in anticipation.

I am in a dilemma of whether to do full time MBA of 2 years or 1 year executive MBA program from US. I have overall 6 years of experience and currently working in Consulting of one of the Big 4's. I have done my graduation in BSc. IT and then have done distance MBA while working in an MNC. At this stage, do you think doing an MBA will help boosting my career? I want to work in the US (do not want to settle there but for few years). Since I don't have 10+2+4 years of full time degree do you think it can be a hindrance in my pursuing of MBA?
I am very confused and hence any help will be appreciated.
Thank you..

I have some queries regarding MBA vs MIS . I have completed my B.E in I.T. (2006) from State University scoring 70 %(3.2 GPA), currently having 8.5 years of experience as Business Analyst/Consultant/QA with 2 US MNC's(fortunate 500 companies) . I am planning to pursue my Masters outside India .
I met few counselor's ,one of them suggested me to go for either MIS or MBA in Information Technology as this will give justification to my IT experience plus my aspiration of staying in IT field . My primary aim is to hit management positions in IT and not so interested in HR/Finance domain . They told me there is no point to go for Master's in Computer Science after 8+ yrs of experience.I have not yet given GMAT/GRE and TOFELL/IELTS. I will be writing my GMAT in November.
Can you please suggest me
1. is MIS related to management with IT subjects ? ( saw few universities course and feel that MIS would help me more )
2. What is difference in MIS and MBA in IT? ( since IT/Project management specialization will come in second year with general MBA , is it more focused to IT vs MIS ? )
3. Job prospect of MIS and MBA in IT ?( How do top Employers see 8.5 yrs + MIS vs 8.5yrs + MBA(I.T.) and future prospects ? )
4. If i choose MIS / MBA in which my work experience will act as added advantage ? Which will benefit more? ( MIS will give more justification to my work ex or MBA ?)
6. GMAT score can be used for both MIS / MBA ?
Thanks in advance !!
