I graduated from St Stephens College, Delhi with B.A. In Mathematics (Hons), with a not-so-honourable outcome in my academics (51%). I did fairly well in school (ICSE-Xth Grade-89.17%) and intermediate (XIIth AP State-92%) levels though. Suffice it to say that my stint at St Stephens could've been better with more extra curriculars. I guess we could chalk it down to immaturity.
I was recruited by a reputable Indian MNC through the Campus Placements as an executive trainee in 2010 that gave MBA training with on-the-job experience. It is here that I have completed a little over 5 years of work experience in the following departments.
• Oil - Economic Planning and Scheduling( 4months)
• Retail - (1 month)
• Corporate HR (1 month)
• Steel- Branding and Promotion/ Marketing Communications (36 months)
• Corporate Communications(12 months)
After I completed college 5 years ago, I wanted to get a few years of work experience at a reputable organisation before pursuing an MBA degree. In the interim, with work taking priority, I could not give a focussed and dedicated effort towards clearing the MBA entrance exams. This year, I decided that enough was enough and focused solely on the GMAT. I stumbled upon the web based “Economist Gmat Tutor” an MBA prep guide and within four months completed 80% of the course before I attempted GMAT last month only to get a score of 640. I believe that I did not get adequate time to prepare for the test due to my work schedule and subsequent pressure (only three days of leave before the test) and thus didn't get the score I wanted.
The thing is- work is interesting, but after some time I think it becomes monotonous with limited options in terms of career progression. Also five years in the same organisation is a little unorthodox in this day and age.
Questions:
1. Should I quit and concentrate on preparations for tests, and if yes, when is it most optimal to do so considering application schedules and at least 2 months of solid test prep?
2. When do I start working on getting recommendations from the people I have worked with?
3. What are my chances of getting into a good MBA program (India or abroad), given the above information regarding academics and experience?
4. What would be the smarter thing to do considering my situation with work- should I quit and immediately get started on the exams, throw caution to the winds and just go with it?

I am Vineet Kumar. I am planning to take up up GMAT but have below queries before taking the final decision.
My age is currently 28 years and have been an average student through out academics (60 - 70 %). My aim to do MBA is to get one good qualification from good school so that it bring both financial and personnel growth . I only have the option to score good in GMAT. Wanted to know can I expect scholarship as I don't have much in my bucket like strong academics, extra-curricular etc. My experience is 4.5 years as software engineer.

Shall I plan to retake GMAT by end of September and begin my applications from this week so that I may apply to a few colleges having R1 deadline in early Oct. I want to do this so as to increase the probability of selection and scholarship (as I have read that R1 has higher probability of selection). Is it a sound strategy or applying in R2 will yield similar results?
Also, suggest which colleges I would be able to aim as 'stretch' if my GMAT increase to >=720 (R1/R2).
Many thanks in advance!

Recently , i have decided to go for Post Graduation but muddled between 2 common career paths!
Career Path 1 : MS in MIS (USA)
Career Path 2 : MBA in Sales/Marketting (India/Singapore)
Profile for Sales/Marketing : 2013 batch pass out, having 2 years of experience as a Product Developer, having good communication and Professional skills, have the competency to convince people to the utmost level, good at selling things and making relations through those,Have the zeal to work in sales/marketing,have always dreamt of being a successful Sales Guy!
Profile for MIS: Technically just above average, have good understanding of technology management ,profound interests in Client engagement,Business Analytics and Customer Relationship Management, potential BA/MIS Manager/IT Specialist.
Question : I have 2 interests,my heart tells me to follow my passion irrespective of the competition in getting through a good univ/job considering majorly India .
On the other hand my brain tells me to pursue my Masters in MIS from USA which can provide me a better job ,consequently a better lifestyle which i have always wanted.
This career choice has started to worry me now! Some serious help required folks!

I am a BBA third year student from Indore. I am doing my UG degree from DAVV, Indore. I will be graduating in 2016.
I have been involved with my father's start-up (export of precision engineered goods) since its inception (May, 2015).
Also, I have a premier sports academy in the pipeline. This project is in the initial planning stages and involves 2 other friends. I have been playing professional cricket for the past 6 years.
I plan to take advanced courses ( 3-6 months ) in finance, tax, accounting and forex after I graduate in 2016.
I plan to apply to the following MBA schools in 2017/2018 :
1. Stanford GSB ( Will apply for the Reliance Dhirubhai Ambani Stanford scholarship)
2. Harvard Business School
3. Wharton
4. London Business School
I will start studying for the GMAT in Jan, 16 ( after my 5th sem exams).
Can you please tell me if the above experience in start ups and the industry will help me stand out in the huge Indian applicant pool?
Also, at the time of application will the above provide me enough business exposure to help me maximize the MBA program?
Regards,
Samanvay

I have more than 10+ years of experience in IT and have been working with MNC's like Wipro, IBM etc .Currently I am playing a mix of middle level Manager and technical lead role. Now I am looking for doing an One year MBA from a good school so that I can switch my career and planning to take GMAT in coming months.
Looking back, I feel my average academic performance will disappoint me getting me placed in good schools like IIMB/ISB etc . Even there is a break in my education . Appreciate if you could help me by advising me on my career, future actions and how much GMAT score I should aim for.
Here is are my academic details:-
10 th CBSE:- 64 %
12th MP Board :- 58%
BE CSE :- 63 %

Hi,
I am seeking carrier guidance to shape my career.
Brief overview:
- I have 9.2 years of experience in IT industry. Mostly worked in technical line and have little expose of management ( team lead of 13 member).
- Current CTC 17.7 Lac/A fixed. This is my fourth company: Infy, TCS, Nuance and now Xplore Tech.
- Married ( no kid yet)
- Lives in Kolkata now, earlier Pune( for 9 year).
Dilemma:
- I feel i am earning good for my experience level( working in rare VXML technology) but things will change in 2-3 year. The technology will not remain rare and that may bring down the salary offered currently given for VXML technology.
- Wife encourage me to study for MBA. So i made few search and found 1 year MBA for executive exciting. I was wondering will MBA help me in career? Will i get good package then my current CTC? Does placement firm consider my earlier package before giving offer? MBA in india or outside?
- I am very average student through out all academic. Always between 60-69.9% ( people call me 60's ka hero ) be it CBSE 10,12, Nagpur university BE(never a backlog), or CAT percentile.
- I believe i am good in math but poor in English ( you might have got an idea from this email). Shall i try for GMAT or continue my career in technical stuff?
- Planning for MBA next year ( i guess this year admission process time has gone, correct me if i am wrong). Do you provide guidance/consultant for whole next year or just before admission time period.
Let me know if you need more details.
Thanks,
Rajiv
