Hi Amit,

I have cleared my CA final in the recent examination. I have done my CA-internship from Deloitte India in International tax department. Further, I have held a good academic record throughout. I am thinking of joining a Management Consulting job instead of going on a traditional path of joining Big4 or some other industry. I want to get 2 years work experience before joining B school. Can you suggest me about the companies which I should target as of now and whether these companies take fresher CAs in their teams?

Thanks in advance.

I am 26 year old Engineer (CS) , currently working as a team lead in an IT firm in Kolkata.
I have 3.9 years of work experience.
I have no onsite exposure yet.
My involvement in extracurricular activities in below average.
I am looking to get into a consulting role in an IT firm.
Last year I took CAT & XAT and scored a below par 93 %tile and 94%tile respectively.
I am planning to take GMAT this year.
Do I have any chance of getting into ISB ?
What are the aspects should I work on to improve my chances?

Thanks,

Hi Amit,

Thanks a lot for this initiative. We don't find many people doing what you do, helping other MBA aspirants make the right choice.

Cutting to the point -

I am a 23 year old IT graduate. Have 1year exp in Client account management at a SaaS based startup (My first and only job so far).

- I would like to know if, and how I can make a switch to management consulting job at the top Strategy firms (Bain & Co, BCG, AT kearney). I find it a bit naive to ask this question, but was curious to know if MBA is the only way to make a switch.

- How is management consulting different from IT consulting? Do they eventually get paid along similar lines?

- If MBA is the only way, then out of Canada, India, Europe, which would be the most preferable destination to get a degree from if I want a global exposure. (US b-schools are out of my budget)

- Last but not the least, is there a work-life balance in management consulting jobs? I don't expect a 9 to 5 job, but working post midnight and in weekends is not my foray, although I am doing that being in a startup

Would love to know your inputs/thoughts. If you find any question invalid, please mention so.

Thanks!
Abhishek

Hi Amit,

I have around 9 years of work experience in financial services. Have good brand names under my belt with a good progressive track record. I wanted to know is there any line of consulting which would be relatively easier to move. I know of Finance Consulting but it does not fit into my future plans and neither cash in my past experience. Would mainstream consulting a big challenge to switch after having number of years on my back.

Yet to take my MBA.GMAT last attempt score 630.

Thanks,
Ambar

Hi,

My name is Sujay. I am writing to you regarding few questions I have about consulting role and how I can/should move forward?

Brief about myself: My total professional experience is around 28 months to date. I am currently working in a strategic research company of Moody's in India for last 5 months. Before this had worked with a business/market research firm in Pune for 2 years.
I've done my BE from MIT, Pune - Petrochemical engineering.
Standard X:92%
Standard XII: 82%
Substantial extra-curricular points and an active business venture. (Can enlist if needed)

My area of question revolves around two main questions -
1. Is MBA the only gateway to big consulting firms? As your book suggests in latter part, few experts have also voiced this opinion that employees might as well just work for 2 years and gain experience. I know it is not THE condition for firms, but practically is that a "Has to have" thing? If not then is only route trying out the hard way, going in at junior-mid level and rising through performances?

2. If MBA is practically needed and would serve well as a learning and training ground for consulting world, then which research/strategy/consulting programs are better in India and selectively outside? I know Kellogg and INSEAD are famous for their consulting record, so are ISB and IIM-A, are there any other good schools which have similar programs and decent placement record for consulting?

I know my profile does not reflect typical consultant profiles, but I really like what I do and take pleasure from the part that my work helps bring some change - in strategy, business plan, expansion etc. And I would really like to learn and scale bigger questions.

Thank you so much for this opportunity and would be a grateful if I can get some guidance.
Regards,
Sujay

Hi Sameer,

I am a technical writer with a leading IT company for the past 4 years. This is my first job. I want to pursue MBA from a reputed B-school (India/International).
I have the following percentage in my career.
10th - 89%
12th - 82%
B.Tech (ME) - 7.95 CGPA

Request your guidance if I can apply for MBA (one-year full time) after appearing for GMAT. Please also suggest if I can take up technical writing again after an MBA. If not, please advise the relevant job profiles I can look upto.

Thanks,
Biswajit
