Nageshnaman,
I think the best way for you to land yourself a job in consulting would be through contacts. If you know of any friends that have been able to secure positions at consulting companies, request them to forward your resume to their managers / HR. These managers are forever short of analysts, and they are always looking to fill vacancies.
A point worth noting - since your current job is quite unrelated to consulting, and since you have not even spent a year in it, if you do make it into a consulting firm, in all probability they will discount these 9 months, and you will need to start from ground zero.
Coming to the topic of your resume, my advice remains the same. Try to highlight those facets of your profile that showcase your quant skills, ability to think logically, etc. It would be important to cite instances / examples where you had to use these qualities in the work you have been doing over the last 9 months.

Hi Amit,
Great job in patiently answering to everyone's query. We collectively owe you a lot for your guidance.
I have been offered admission to IIM Calcutta PGDM program starting Jun 2013. My career goal at the end of the program is to join BBM India as a Consultant (1-2 ranks above entry level). I would appreciate if you could independently evaluate if my profile fits the bill.
Work Ex = 4 years. 2 years with Deutsche Bank Singapore (management trainee program in Group Tech and Ops). 2 years with JP Morgan Singapore as an Internal Consultant advising on business re-engineering and cost efficiency for Asia offices. Traveled extensively in Asia (HK, Tokyo, Seoul and Jakarta) on work and internal client visits. My recommendations have delivered cost savings of USD 2.2 mio to the bank. Current rank - Associate.
1 year internship in Philadelphia, US with an enterprise tech start-up as a Product Mgmt and Marketing Intern.
Undergrad Education - 3 yrs at National University of Singapore (Comp Engineering), 1 year at University of Pennsylvania (Engineering Entrepreneurship). Full scholarship.
School Education - India. 95%+ board exams.
Although I am fairly confident that subject to decent performance at IIM-C I will get entry level consulting jobs in India, but given my relevant experience I am aiming for a higher starting position. I would like to get your opinion on whether that is feasible target.
Thanks a lot.

Pkay,
Let's first look at how the process usually works.
Once you submit your application to the IIMC placement office, or alternatively, send your resume directly to the company, HR is going to compare the objective elements of your profile - number of years of work ex., GPA, marks / percentage from school board exams, etc. - to their internal averages / benchmarks / cutoffs. They would have strict guidelines that might look somewhat like this:
1. Upto 24 months of experience, graduate of tier 1 college, GPA > 6.5, etc. - Associate
2. Upto 24 months of experience, graduate of tier 2 college, GPA > 6.5, etc. - Sr. Analyst
3. >24 to 48 months of experience, graduate of tier 1 college, GPA > 6.5, etc. - Sr. Associate
4. >24 to 36 months of experience, graduate of tier 2 college, GPA > 6.5, etc. - Associate
5. GPA < 6 - ineligible
[...more such line items]
The above list is a fictitious one - every company will have its own. Therefore, based on the objective elements of your profile, HR is going to reqeust the panel to interview you for a particular position that is aligned with their list of specs. For you to gain entry at a higher level than what HR has recommended, you will need to show some rockstardom in your interviews, and then the panel has to make a special reqeust to HR for an exception to be made, if they think that you are worth the extra pain / effort. Such exceptions are rare, but then they do happen.
Assuming that you aren't going to be able to rock the world through your interviews (and therefore an "exception" isn't going to be made for you), given that you already have 4+ years or experience, with "good numbers" all along, and assuming that you do well at IIMC, as well as in the interview, I think you will be offered a role that is a rung or two higher than entry level.
If I were you, I would definitely expect a Sr. Associate-level position. A manger-level position would be a stretch.
Thanks for your compliments, and all the best.

Hi Amit - Ok. I have also applied to INSEAD and hoping for a conversion (long admit process ongoing). Is the weight of an INSEAD or IIM-C degree any different when it comes to top-tier consulting recruitment in India and the rank at which you join? Thanks once again.

hey!Sameer,
i would like to discuss about my present condition of work. i am an electrical engineering graduate working in projects for the past 5 years. my job profilr consists of intense travelling to places in india & abroad. i have to go in site and work on machines & instruments and i'm doing the same for the past few years. nowadays i have a strong feeling within me coming up that i should change my job but the problem is that i will get a job of same profile which is of no use as i want to switch from this current profile of mine as iam really getting tired of this travel and work.i think i have only left with an option of choosing an MBA degree as my last resort. i think that an MBA degree can help me to get that drift.i'm pretty much confused and frustrated at this stage of my life.i feel like i have it in me but m not getting the chances.
could you please suggest me something.....

Hi Sameer,

Thanks,
Ambar
