I belong to General category (Male)
I have 3 yrs 3 months of work experience in a leading IT co.(CTC 5 LACS per annum) and my academic details are
10th- 85% ,12th - 69%, B.tech - 83% . Few extra curricular achievements.
Now considering my work exp should i go for another CAT attempt?
Or Shall i look for other options(please guide if any).
I have heard about Great Lakes, chennai (but don't have much idea)
Is it worth to apply for Great lakes PGPM 1 year program through My CAT score considering the high fee structure (fully dependent on Bank Loan) ,my work experience and real placement scenario (ROI) ?
Or something good i should do which i am unaware of ?
So could you please suggest me what path should i take .
Thanks & Regards
Sasank

I have just visited your website, and i feel like i have hit jackpot.
From the advice and guidance to the language used on the site does strike a
chord with today's generation.
Coming to me...
My name is karan singh have completed my graduation from delhi university,
khalsa college in the year 2010. Then i did a diploma in financial planning
in 2010-2011 and appeared for CFP. Have cleared three exams of CFP and two
are left.
After my diploma i worked for roughly a year with MAX newyork
insurance and reaching my targets they had even send me to singapore on
leadership conclave.
But in early 2012 i left my job and joined an NGO. And started doing
community services. Later i started doing community services in Gurdawara
Manikaran Sahib, kullu as well.
Meanwhile i have planned to take up further studies in abroad, and is
looking forward for some consulting firm.
There are some queries which i have, i do hope you could answer them and and
take some load of my mind.
1) with my work ex what do you suggest MBA OR MS
2) i plan to take up enterpreneur business once back in India, if you have
any such course which i could take or the university offering it.
Please care to share.
Also with interest in community service if you have something related to
that i would love to hear it too.
3) earlier i had thought to study in UK but with the change in norms in Visa
i think now USA would be better. Is it the right approach or am i thinking
too much?
4) right now I am putting up in Manikaran Sahib. If i seek your advice. How
will you be able to help me?
5) i am planning to take Gmat in first week of april. Have i left it too
late to take the exam to take admission in this year spring session?
Looking forward for your reply.
My profile
Icse 72%
Isc 82%
B.com prog. 63%
diploma in financial planning
One year job experience

akshay1777 wrote:WORKEX:1 YEAR IN WIPRO TECH.(INDIAN IT GIANT) as PROJECT ENGINEER...I WANT TO DO ONLY A 1 YEAR MBA PROGRAM OR FEW 16,15 MONTH ACCELERATED MBA PROGRAMS
You'd need a significantly higher amount of experience for 1 year programs. Even for regular 2-year programs in the US, the average work experience is around 4-5 years.
akshay1777 wrote:POST MBA TARGET: TO GET INTO COMPANIES LIKE NESTLE,COCA COLA (FMCG COMPANIES)...FROM WHICH UNIVERSITIES IN US/EUROPE/UK/CAN/AUS SHOULD I DO MY MBA AND IN WHAT SPECIALISATION TO GET INTO THESE COMPANIES?
These companies recruit for multiple roles - marketing, strategy, general management, finance. You'll have to carve out a niche for yoursef in one of those fields first before you consier an MBA. Another reason not to jump in with very little experience.
akshay1777 wrote:also is it true that in UK it is difficult or practically impossible to get jobs post mba and that US offers only IT jobs for indian MBA's
Nope, not true. If you go to the good schools, you can get good jobs. Read this post about Cambridge MBA placements

Sasank Anna, you've tried your luck with CAT. Now your experience level is good enough for GMAT wale MBA options. Time to move to a different league.gmatking wrote:I have 3 yrs 3 months of work experience in a leading IT co....Now considering my work exp should i go for another CAT attempt?
You'll find a story we published on Great Lakes Chennai.gmatking wrote:I have heard about Great Lakes, chennai (but don't have much idea)
Why not take the GMAT and open up more avenues?gmatking wrote:Is it worth to apply for Great lakes PGPM 1 year program through My CAT score considering the high fee structure (fully dependent on Bank Loan) ,my work experience and real placement scenario (ROI)?

Damn! I've been visiting this website for so many years and never came across any hidden jackpot. Pleejh share some of that amount, papeji.dangkaran wrote:Sir, I have just visited your website, and i feel like i have hit jackpot.

As you want to get into consulting, MBA would be better. But see if you can get your career back into a corporate role first so you struggle less with the story.dangkaran wrote:1) with my work ex what do you suggest MBA OR MS
Plot getting confusing now. NGO to consulting to entrepreneurship? Kahani mein itne saare twists kyon laa rahe ho?dangkaran wrote:2) i plan to take up enterpreneur business once back in India...
Check out the cambridge placement link I shared in the earlier response. Anyway, if your basic rationale and foundation is shaky neither US nor UK will help.dangkaran wrote:3) earlier i had thought to study in UK but with the change in norms in Visa i think now USA would be better. I'm afraid I can't help at this stage. You'd need to figure out the basic storyline on your own first. See if the timing is right. If the profile would be attractive to bschool Adcoms.dangkaran wrote:4) right now I am putting up in Manikaran Sahib. If i seek your advice. How will you be able to help me?
Most US bschools have a fall intake. So too late for that. Not sure which schools you have in mind and what their application dates are.dangkaran wrote:5) i am planning to take Gmat in first week of april. Have i left it too late to take the exam to take admission in this year spring session?

Once i happen to encash the jackpot i will gladly share it.!!
"As you want to get into consulting, MBA would be better. But see if you can get your career back into a corporate role first so you struggle less with the story."
I dont wont a carrear in consultation. I know it sounds ambitious but i wont to be an enterpreneur. I wont to study abroad, work for a year or so and tgen come back to "apna desh" with a plan and do business.
"Plot getting confusing now. NGO to consulting to entrepreneurship? Kahani mein itne saare twists kyon laa rahe ho?"
As In usa you can take up courses i thought to add something having to do with community services. Since now its UK, lets drop this idea.
"I'm afraid I can't help at this stage. You'd need to figure out the basic storyline on your own first. See if the timing is right. If the profile would be attractive to bschool Adcoms. "
Right now the weather doesnt suit travelling, i can travell to chandigarh if the need arrises, to gigure out the basic storyline.
"Most US bschools have a fall intake. So too late for that. Not sure which schools you have in mind and what their application dates are."
Hmmm so lets focus on UK then. The schools i have in mind are imperial college, said, judge, warwick.

Regarding B-school selection, I believe that brand-value of college plays a major role in the decision making process of most applicants.
There are other (perhaps more important) factors, yet star-dust takes the largest piece of the pie.
But a big college comes with a big price tag.
So do these prestigious programs justify the costs that are associated with them?
Assuming one can afford the best program (perhaps by the skin of his teeth!!) and can jump hoops to get an admit, is it always in his best interest to go for the "best" (usually costliest) program he can manage?
I know the question is generic and can only be answered on a per-situation basis, but I am not looking for an answer; I just want some thoughts on the fee vs. value-add of these high ranking programs.
(Argument is between Top 15 and say Top 30 assuming one has better chances of getting scholarships in lower ranking programs)

Long time reader, avid fan.
Due to certain reasons, would only be able to apply in 2014, no later. Have my heart set out on Europe, specifically Germany.
I understand this is little to go on, but writing to you is a start nevertheless.
Would you be able to help?
I graduated in 2011 as a chemical engineer and would have a total work experience of 30 months(Accenture) by December.
Also worked with a firm that did turnkey project work in utilities engineering during the first two years of engineering college.
Have a diploma in Business Management from Shailesh Mehta School of Mgmt, IITB.
Got awarded a Gold Merit Award 2 quarters back, promoted in 14 months.
GRE - 321/340 (converted, 770/800 Q, 600/800 V) , TOEFL - 117/120
Extra curriculars involve lots of theatre work, was on the football team, co-ordinated a national level seminar in college.
German as a subject for 3 years in school and 2 years in junior college (passable)
1. Do you think my profile would be competitive enough for German Schools? (the admissions team confirmed that they would consider exceptional candidates with less than 36 months exp)
2. Would not having given the GMAT be a major handicap (do a few recruiters also ask for GMAT Scores?)
3. Current job profile involves interfacing with company leadership, coordinating recovery etc - Hence a general mgmt course.
4. How hard would it be for relatively younger candidates to get jobs post MBA? While I shouldn't be worrying about jobs
at this stage, given that I would have some debt from student loans, am trying to take all things into consideration.
Thanks!
Newbie

Karan, if you want to get into entrepreneurship, maybe you shouldn't think of an MBA at this stage. Read why many bschool grads may never launch a startup.dangkaran wrote:I dont wont a carrear in consultation. I know it sounds ambitious but i wont to be an enterpreneur. Start something right now. Bschools won't teach you how to launch a business in India. Woh aapko khud seekhna padega. Save your money for your business. Don't donate it to bschools.
