//GMAT score - 710 (Q50,V38). AWA is 5.5.
Work Experience -10 Years+ Top Indian IT company
Industry domain - Global Markets and Investment Banking
You know the first question many Admission Officers would want to know, right? Why Full-time MBA as opposed to an Executive MBA? Keep an answer ready for that.
//now want to enhance career thru a Full time MBA in finance with major focus on the companies which provide software and IT services to institutions
Next open question would be - if you are already at the intersection of technology + finance, and you aren't planning to discard either, do you really need an MBA?
//I am targeting LBS, CBS and INSEAD schools for Fall 2013 entry, along with ROSS, HEC and Anderson as safe schools.
HEC is good fit for your profile, but it has a selectivity rate that can give any of the US top 20 a run for their money.
Ross and Anderson aren't as tough as the H/S/W, but for US schools (and for schools like INSEAD, CBS and LBS) the bigger challenge is 'fitting in' and we are going in with much more work-ex than the regular guys who get in.
So I wouldn't call any of them as 'Safe'.
For you, being in a 'Finance' school is less important than finding a school where you will learn from the others and be able to take finance electives that you want. Beyond that it's a matter of targetting the right companies and going all out to get your foot in the door.
Being close to New York, London, Paris, Singapore will help though.

//Got to know about this forum from GMAT Club. It is amazing that you guys are helping out so many candidates with this initiative.
Glad you found us, Robin-ji.
//GMAT 750/Q50/V40/AWA 4.5
Dual Degree (B.Tech/M.Tech), IITB (2010), CGPA 7.9/10
The dual degree program seems to be getting pretty popular. We are getting many such profiles.
//2010-2012: Worked with a big-4 consulting firm in their technology practice for 2 years
Presently: Will be joining an international investment management firm as an analyst(AUM ~ 2 billion)
Probably not the right time to have made the switch. Hardly gives you a few months in the new role to talk about a new stories from a new industry.
//Actively working on a startup on Mobile Social Media
Already up and running or still in the concept stage?
// Career goals
S/T: I would like to join a consulting or investment banking company, gain expertise, build a strong network before finally moving into VC/PE
L/T: I would like to manage a portfolio of good companies or startups (probably as a VC or PE investor)
We seem to be at a crossroad here. It'll have to be either a startup to Venture Capital transition, or an I-banking to Private Equity.
It cannot be an I-banking to VC transition as the skill sets are conflicting.
Which is why that previous question (about the status of your startup) gains more importance.
//I am looking for colleges in Asia, preferably in India or Singapore, but I am also open to top 10 schools in the US.
List of schools include NUS, NTU, ISB, NYU-Stern, Chicago-Booth, MIT-Sloan etc.
All good choices, if you can straighten out the where-I-am and where-I-want-to-go parts.

//Are there any good ones for IT consulting etc.
The good thing about IT consulting (and technology opportunities in general) is that you don't necessarily have to be close to the bigger financial hubs.
Most tech companies have offices in tier-2 cities as well and they do pretty much the entire gamut of operational activities from these office.
Unless of course, you are targetting pure strategy or marketing roles, where proximity to the head office and to the main clients (respectively) matters.
//Any suggestions on the list? I have Carnegie Mellon, HEC, IE and Mendoza on the list but I am not sure if my profile is worth giving these colleges a try. Any thoughts?
Sure these are all worth a try.
Whether your profile is strong enough and how you can maximise your chances at these schools (and possibly others), we'll find out and plan accordingly if you allow us to grill you further.
The basic idea here is to target schools where you are above and below the average student profile, so you don't have regrets of either overshooting your potential or underestimating it.

The distributor role isn't a bottleneck, but your plans to move into consulting might become a stumbling block if you can't convincingly explain the logic.
Question for you: How do you think your 2 years of IT experience and 2 years as a distributor help you become a successful consultant?

Thanks for your prompt response.
Being a local distributor, I am missing out any knowledge of how big B2B transactions take place, between the Manufacturers and international level distributors and how this hierarchy works until the wide range of products reach at the bottom level, the consumers.
Firms like Redington are working with multiple clients and have their own channel partners for each city or region and this whole supply chain management is such a vague term to explain, but what I know is that, I want to be the part of such a big picture. I want to be at consulting role where I can provide my services and domain knowledge to optimize the whole B2B cycle for better services, sales and revenue.
Sir, I think my thought is still in immature state and therefore I am looking for when, why and how type answers and therefore MBA curriculum, according to me, can teach me this general science.
Which B Schools would be good for my profile, Please evaluate.

Qualification: CA with 6 yrs of post qualification exp.and CIMA.I have scored first class in all my undergrad courses.I have also completed CFA level 1 but due to tough levels later I have put it on hold for around a couple of yrs back.
GMAT Score: Yet to take. Manhan and Kap free test avg score 530. My quant is not that good with avg of 25% but verbal is better @ 50%
Work exp:. Into audits (accounting firms) for 1/2 of work ex. and into credit appraisal (financial institution) for the other half.
Major achievements : None. Never came across any suitable opportunity
Career goals.: I would like to pursue a career which gives me enough flexibility to move across various industry and regions, while at the same time allows international exposure and enough opportunity to travel. Initially at the start of my career I was keen on financial markets, but wonder if at this stage it would make sense to get at it at a good level.
Queries and concern : The thought to pursue MBA comes at a time when I feel stagnated with the kind of roles that my qualification can offer. The current scope for me has been to switch jobs with a miniscule pay rise and with very difficult negotiations, a position which is a level above my current (nonetheless with long hierarchies, it does not get any better )However, the work profile does not change for any better. I wanted to pursue MBA right aftr my undergrad level but due to extreme financial constraints that never happened. Now, in my early thirties, I am unable to fair any better. I would like to understand given my background (qualif., age. work ex) what would be my chances of recruiters recruiting me overseas in case I pursue MBA (which would also take anthr 2 yrs to complete). Will there be gender biases when gaining employment after MBA? Which are the colleges I should target apart from top ones (since their cost is still enormous for me) and which can get me an employment in the overseas market.

Thank you for starting this amazing initiative and it is definitely a huge help for the thousands of MBA aspirants like me. Please evaluate my profile and provide your views/opinions :
Qualifications:
Class X : 79 %
Class XII : 81%
B.Tech : EEE from Bharati Vidyapeeth College of engg, 76% (top 10 - 15% of my batch)
MBA : Symbiosis Institute of management Studies(Marketing majors), GPA 2.9/4
- GMAT score: 680 (q : 48, v : 35) AWA - awaiting [I am confused whether I should give it again? I panicked on the test day a bit, was getting 720+ consistently on my mocks]
- Work-experience:
1. Marsh India, Mumbai - 12 months.
Worked in the FINPRO team at Marsh, which handles Financial and Professional lines of insurance broking and advisory services. The FINPRO Mumbai team comprised of nine people who handle a client base of over 170 companies. My key focus areas were relationship management with corporate clients and business development - with clients and prospects mainly from the shipping industry, upcoming IPO companies and law firms.
2. Citibank N A. Mumbai till Dec 11, now in Delhi - 25 months(currently employed)
Working in the Citigold vertical of Citibank, as a Relationship Manager, which handles SME banking and high net worth individuals banking and investment advisory services. My key focus area is relationship management with SMEs and HNI clients and generating revenues for the bank via banking products, services and solutions on offer.
- Major achievements at work and outside :
• The highest revenue generating employee across the country in the Citigold segment for the 2nd quarter, year 2011.
• Have been recognized with three internal awards for cross-selling equity brokerage, highest mortgage disbursal in 1st quarter 2011 and highest number of upgraded clients to the Citigold platform
• Leveraged my relationship with a client to acquire a Private Equity deal which involved dealing closely with our private equity client, the investor company and the investee company. The deal resulted in the highest revenue ever earned on a single deal for our branch in the previous financial year.
• Placement of Kidnap for Ransom risk cover of a USD 500 Mn dollar Indian company in the London insurance market.
- Was a compere for my MBA institute for the two years - and managed all kinds of events from national level seminars to social events (including a SPIC MACAY western convention and Sam Maneckshaw's lecture held at the institute)
- We started an entrepreneurship cell at our Engg college (first of its kind) and also organised(6-7 of us) a business fest in the engg college, first time for a business fest to be organised in an engg college across the university.
- Career goals :
The primary reasons for me to pursue another MBA are lack of career progression, understanding and network in the BFSI sector with my current qualifications.
I enjoy dealing with clients and am looking for a front end profile post my MBA. One of the things I am hoping that the MBA will help me to figure out is what part of Banking or BFSI I would be most interested in?
Right now, Treasury Sales, corporate banking and general strategy are what interest me. I have tried to switch to these functions but without a good background or adequate exposure and network, it has not worked out is and thus the decision of the second MBA.
Extra curricular :
Krav Maga(close combat, self-defense) - practioner level
part of college social intiative, Organised a medical camp at a Maharashtra village
Amateur backpacker
Thanks in advance and all the best for everything!

Here are the answers to your queries:
I am currently in the R&D function that I mentioned in my post.
Is it a globally recognised certification? Is it normal for people to take a break to complete it?
• It’s not globally recognized, but it is industry recognized. I had to build the skill sets required to move into the R&D function, without which it would have been possible. Taking a break is rare but not uncommon for people making such a switch (Manufacturing to design/development).
Which one are you leaning towards?...
• I would be leaning towards a Project Management role
It'll be great if you can replace the junior sounding 'Executive' label with the next position in the hierarchy. Possible?
• As far as moving one more step in the hierarchy is concerned, it is ironical that in the current organization, the next step in the ladder is that of ‘Executive’ (Org. Structures are totally different)
With this profile are there other schools that I could ‘apply’ to?
Is the TOEFL mandatory? Many schools do mention of waivers. Do they stick to these waivers in all cases?
