Thanks for your reply. I was thinking to focus this year on applications. If I again try for GMAT it would again take at least a month time to reach beyond 740. DO you think it will be still better to focus on retaking GMAT?
I also think that if somehow I do not get admission this year then I will retake GMAT and will try to get a score 740 or above.

I dont think waiting for another month for a better GMAT would be the most prudent decision. Now is the time for action and as mentioned a lot of times on this forum, GMAT is just one of the parameters of the many other

I'm planning to apply for my MBA in '2014 . My goal is to do my MBA from the top 10 global MBA college ( It might seen a little vague as I am not naming any particular schools but the reason for it is also that I am hoping that you can help me sort this too.)
(1) Based on my profile kindly let me know what is my realistic chances of me getting into a top tier MBA college.
(2) What would you suggest to make my profile stronger i.e. any courses or skills that I can work on.
(3) Being in my thirties do you think it will hamper my chances and if there is any thing I can do for it.
(4)Finally if you can suggest some colleges that my kind of profile will be more suitable for and will have a higher chance of getting into.
(5)Have few Gap years in my profile i.e. after 12 and after engineering for which i have nothing to show for i.e. no documents of any work experience even though I worked as a free lancer in those years.
Dear Niche,
It would have been useful to know the nature of your family business to do a better assessment. Here are a few thoughts to the questions you raise:
Cheers,
- As I mentioned, it is tough to evaluate without understanding the nature of your family business. Moreover, for a better and dependable assessment of your chances, the MBA MAP does a far better job.
- More than courses, step one for you should be to understand the management consulting industry in greater details. If possible, try and do projects with your NGO in association with some of them so you get a taste of what this means.
- As they say, age is just a number. But depending on your overall profile, this will make some schools more achievable than others. Refer point 1 above for more insights
- refer point 1
- If you used these gaps productively and can honestly mention the type of work, it is ok to mention that experience. Assuming you were not working for free, your income can also serve as one of the ways to show you were working for instance.

Hi MG,
Thanks for your reply.
1) The family business I was talking about was a food product manufacturing factory/plant. I have worked for 2 years in it and have good understanding of its production process ,revenue, profit margin etc.
2) Though I really appreciate your assessement of my profile but still am little confused regarding the colleges at which I have a better chance of getting into also 1 year Vs 2 year MBA dilemma is also there and I understand you service MBA MAP must be good to sort these issues but still I need to know If my MBA plan/chances are good enough for a good MBA college or not before I move further on it.
3) Also do you think if I move back into a corporate HR role now it will enhance my profile and make it stronger .
4) Also just to give some idea about colleges I was looking at are:
INSEAD,ISB,IMD,Judge,NSU
Would really appreciate if you can provide your view on these issues also.
And believe me that MBA MAP is certainly some thing I am seriously considering to help me in my application process.

Well you are making this a bit of chicken and egg when there is really no need for that. As I mentioned, it is difficult for us to pass verdict without having the privilege of speaking with you or interacting with you. Most top schools accept a wide variety of candidates including those with profile seemingly similar to yours. The process is democratic and it really depends on one the quality of your experiences/impact you've created and two how you present those. And you profile does have elements that are interesting enough to me as an outsider. Beyond that, it really depends on how you build the application.
3) Also do you think if I move back into a corporate HR role now it will enhance my profile and make it stronger .
That may not necessarily be a good idea - unless there is some tie-in to your post MBA goal(s). Otherwise it is likely to come across as a bit of confused career trajectory.
4) Also just to give some idea about colleges I was looking at are:
INSEAD,ISB,IMD,Judge,NSU

Those are some very nice colleges in my view
Jokes apart, a 1 yr course at your age would usually make more sense given the ROI and other factors involved.
And believe me that MBA MAP is certainly some thing I am seriously considering to help me in my application process.
Bahut shukriya that you consider us worth a consideration

Siddharth,
Points to ponder as one looks at your profile parameters:
- Its tough to evaluate the quality of your experience with the details you have provided. Things like on-site experience(s), team size, career advancement track record are indicators through which you should evaluate your work-ex. Which of these do you think differentiate you?
- For ISB, you will be couple of years (or more) above the average. So bear this in mind.
- 'Strategy Consulting' is a heavily used post-MBA goal in general - simply because they take people with all sorts of backgrounds. But that does not mean that that is a passable thing. Each candidate needs to justify why he/she wants to go in this field. Because so many people write about it, it is a fairly competitive field. So unless you have strong rationale/reason/justification for this goal, an IT management role would be more natural.
Cheers,
MG

Would really appreciate some help on my profile
- GMAT score: 720 (48Q/40V/5AWA/5IR)
- Work-experience: Working as a consultant with Deloitte, will complete 2 years this July.
-Have conducted 2 onsite visits for vendor audits. (Business Risk)
-Have been onsite for technical project implementations. (Tech Risk)
-Have led engagements from offshore and grew team by actively training new resources.
- Major achievements at work and/or outside
-Awarded for Business Risk project work
-Gold Medalist in Electronics and Telecom Engg.
-Best Outgoing Student in College
-Posts held: General Secretary, Editor in chief, Head of PR for College fests
- Career goals: I want a function shift, into marketing domain, preferably in Tech/FMCG industry
- Colleges targeted: I am looking at applying to ISB (2014), HKUST, Booth, Rotman and Kellogg's.
Now for the questions
1. For people making a functional shift such as mine (IT Consulting to Marketing), what would be a good approach in the essays?
2. I dropped INSEAD from my list after researching and finding that international exposure is valued very highly there- I wanted to ask, is there a way to circumvent that? To show some other experience set? (My parents were in the defence forces, so I have traveled across India and have exposure to many cultures and peoples, would that count?)
3. Since ISB is my only target school for 2014, what would you recommend for their essays, considering my relatively less experience and background?
Thanks in advance!
Divya

I am targeting MBA starting in 2014 in B-schools in Bangalore and have been doing a bit of research on schools other related contents for the past 1.5 months. I am keen on pursuing Executive MBA program and my options are limited to B-schools in Bangalore since I am married and settled here in Bangalore. Following are my details:
Qualification and academics - Bachelor of Electronics and Communication engineering from Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati. Graduated with 75%, Honours (top 5% of the class)
GMAT score - appearing on August 21st.
Work Experience - I have around 9.5 years of work experience in IT industry including 3 years of experience in project leadership in technical role. I have worked with 2 major MNCs and earned significant awards and achievements in project execution, delivery and development. I have left my job recently owing to health reasons(they are very much valid and I can explain them in an interview, but not in a forum ) and I am keen on starting my own business now. I am interested in pursuing Executive MBA course( interested in Finance, accounting, Marketing, Family business management) in Bangalore. Can you suggest B-schools in Bangalore accepting GMAT score offering Executive MBA courses? I am hopeful of achieving a score of 700 in GMAT.
Thanks,
Mamatha.
