The GMAT score has been widely used for the MBA application process. However, as we see many more top colleges accepting the GRE score, there has been a steady increase in the number of applicants submitting the GRE score in place of the GMAT.
GRE score was previously used for the MS programs; however with business schools accepting it, MS aspirants who appear for the GRE can keep their options open. This also works in favour of the business schools as they’re able to diversify their applicant pool with more candidates applying from varied streams unlike before. The GRE scores too, like the GMAT, are valid for a period of five years.
The option also bodes well for some non-engineering applicants who think GRE syllabus is easier than GMAT.

The ETS website has the complete list of MBA programs in the world accepting the GRE score.
A word of caution: The ETS page doesn’t have all the names listed, but the pdf file does.
Use that pdf as the most recent and credible reference, since the names we’ve included are only representative. The school you are aiming for might get added to the ETS list when you are ready to apply.
According to a survey done by Kaplan Test prep in 2016 at 224 US business schools, it was found that 92 percent of them accept the GRE score as against its 2009 survey during which only 24 percent of schools were accepting the GRE scores.
It is obvious that there has been a changing trend with a lot more candidates opting to submit their GRE scores for MBA admissions. Admissions officers from the top MBA programs have also stated that they do not have preference for any particular score over the other. So, you can choose between the two tests depending upon the score that works best for you.
Business schools usually report their average GMAT scores, however a lot of b-schools may not disclose their average GRE scores. So, how do you know if your GRE score is right for a particular b-school?
The ETS website has made provision for a conversion tool in which you can enter your GRE score and get an idea of what the corresponding predicted GMAT score would be.
Finally, whether you submit the GMAT or the GRE score, remember that your MBA application will be evaluated on many other parameters and not just based on these scores. So, work hard and come up with not just a good GRE or GMAT score but also focus on building a great application!

This article is very informative. Thanks! Would you have any analysis/information around equivalent GRE scores for GMAT scores? Say, what would be considered an equivalent GRE for a 740 GMAT? Any insights would be much appreciated 🙂
Hi Sameer,
Is thr GRE score valid for Indians as well or in the places only where GMAT is not available.
@Anshuman: See if this helps, though it’s the reverse of what you are looking for:

@Rajat: It’s valid for everyone, irrespective of whether GMAT is or isn’t available in the region. They are both competing programs, vying for a bigger share of the market.

Sir,
I have given my Bcom(Hons.) 1st year exam and i want to know that what should i do now becoz it’s my free time. I got 2months holidays and I m interested in GRE exam and I want to take coaching regarding this exam..so please help me out..
How are the chances of getting a scholarship affected ( assuming that GRE/GMAT scores serve as a make or break criterion in an otherwise balanced profile).
I am currently averaging 650-670 in GMAT. On the other hand my GRE score is touching 330 and I’d save tons of time not trying to improve GMAT score.
Go with the GRE score. Admission officers have gone through the learning curve over the past few years, to know how to compared GRE and GMAT scores.
Make sure you target the right programs (based on your profile and aspirations), and put in strong applications. Scholarship decisions depend a lot on those aspects too.
Drop us an email if you need professional help with the applications. For all we know, we’d be hosting your GRE admit success story on our site soon.
