Strategy Consulting Jobs

McKinsey & Company
Associate (Experienced Professional)

Overview:
McKinsey & Company is a global management consulting firm that helps leading corporations and organizations make distinctive, lasting and substantial improvements in their performance. Over the last seven decades, the Firm's primary objective has remained constant: to serve senior leaders as their most trusted external advisor on critical issues facing their organizations. With over 6,000 consultants deployed from 83 offices in 45 countries, McKinsey advises companies, governments and non-profit organizations on strategic, operational, organizational and technological issues. The Firm has extensive experience in all major industry sectors and primary functional areas as well as in-depth expertise in high-priority areas for today's leaders, such as growth, globalization and the new economy.
Detailed Description:
McKinsey & Company is looking to hire experienced professionals into our consulting staff as associates. McKinsey hires experienced professionals from almost every major industry sector, from a wide variety of functional specializations, and from backgrounds as diverse as journalism, law, medicine, the military, government and non-profit organizations. When you join McKinsey as a consultant, you are joining a firm that will challenge you and invest heavily in your professional development. You will build leadership skills beyond what you thought possible and gain access to the most extraordinary leadership network in the world. As a McKinsey consultant, you will have the opportunity to help the best organizations solve some of their most difficult problems. When hired, experienced professionals commonly seek to use their previous experience, but also to grow in a broad variety of new situations, having learning experiences and facing challenges not offered in their previous positions. McKinsey is uniquely able to provide an environment that supports these aspirations. You can choose a career path that gives you broad exposure to a variety of different industries, including retail, pharmaceuticals, financial services, telecommunications, and private equity, to name a few. You may also want to gain exposure to a wide set of functional areas including strategy, marketing, organization, technology, and operations. McKinsey has 18 industry practices and 6 functional practices to choose from. While all consultants develop specialized knowledge and a focused program as they progress with McKinsey, most are initially very broad in their focus, meaning they do not need specific industry or functional expertise to be successful. For consultants who join McKinsey as experienced professionals, this can mean building on previous knowledge or developing unique experience in an area that is completely new.

The majority of experienced professional hires join McKinsey as associates. The primary role of an associate is to lead problem solving efforts on a portion of a client engagement. Associates play an important role on client engagements by identifying issues, forming hypotheses, designing and conducting analyses, synthesizing conclusions into recommendations and helping to implement change with our clients. Throughout an engagement, an associate is involved in discussions and presentations with senior client leadership. Associates work on engagement teams typically consisting of 3 to 6 consultants. A typical engagement lasts between 2 and 4 months and an associate will normally work on a single engagement on a full-time basis.

Because the starting experience for each associate entering McKinsey varies, so too will the mix of client exposure and more formal training needed to build capabilities. When ready, an associate is promoted to the role of engagement manager, an expanded leadership position on an engagement team. Engagement managers take on greater responsibility for leading our client engagements, structuring the problem solving, assigning work and coaching McKinsey team members, and managing day-to-day interactions with client team members.

Desired Skills:
An associate role is a unique opportunity for individuals to have a substantial impact on the world’s leading global institutions and companies. Accordingly, McKinsey could be an exciting place for you if you have the following qualities:
Exceptional problem solving skills
Demonstrated leadership ability and experience
Superb communications skills
Strong personal drive and motivation
High-value personal qualities: resourceful, responsible, tenacious, independent, self-confident, high-energy, etc.
