First to answer your question. My reason to do the MBA comes from the fact that I want to enhance my current management/leadership skills. I am also looking at an MBA to help build a network with likeminded people. My last reason for looking at this option is to get my academic record on track and cover up for my past mistakes which still haunt me.
I have a few follow up questions for you.
1. Except aiming higher on my GMAT are there any other additional things that you would recommend, which will help me improve my overall application. I can easily get a letter of recommendations from my Regional Head and CEO. Will that help me further ?
2. Do you think that working for another year and adding to more exp. to my resume will help my overall application further by covering up a little for the academic side ? I personally don’t want to move below the likes of ISB or SPJain
3.What do you mean by balanced colleges? Can you suggest other colleges except the two mentioned above that give higher weight age to profiles ?
4.Anything else that might help me...

Class XII - 77.4% - 2004
<<snip>>
Query2; What are other 1 year international programs that i should try for? (keeping in mind my low score and Male-Indian-IT bracket --- Is this good idea?)
Jumping into your queries with some additional perspectives thrown in for good measure Raunak:
- Though you have had an erratic start to your educational career, your current professional arc seems to be a fine one. The transition you are seeking makes sense and Samsung brand name will help. Over the years, we've worked with quite a few folks from that place and know that the quality of work is top class. Your career acceleration will be good too. For ISB, the GMAT will be just about adequate. So it will really boil down to the competition out there. The only thing you can potentially look at improving is your GMAT if you have the energy left. If not, go for it with all guns blazing. Your ECs should help some
- For reasons mentioned here, I will not dish out random names. That said, there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to stake a claim at some decent schools out there say in EU or Asia. Being part of a product firm means a bit different than being part of the IT pool which is more on the services side.

65.06% in my UG
Can you tell me what is the right time for me to seek for admission in an august US Business School and which schools should I keep in mind.
Nitin,
Anywhere between 3-5 years of experience is good to target before you apply. Read here for some rationale on this.
But make sure you utilize the next few years correctly so you can build a strong profile. You may find our Profile Builder package relevant in that context.

Eagerly awaiting your reply.

A few perspectives for your Surya:
- First up, I think you have some confusion on nomenclature. Read here for Executive MBA Vs MBA for Executives confusion.
- Though you mention Product Management, I am not certain whether what you are doing is Product Development instead? The two are different. If you are really doing the former, than that is really substantial since Product Management is in many ways, already a post-MBA profile. This will lend a LOT of credibility to your profile and make it pretty distinctive. Even if it is the latter, it could be pretty interesting albeit a bit constrained since Product Development in automotive is a fairly niche area
- The GMAT score is an important criteria which is not mentioned here. That will also define your chances to some extent.
- The 6-sigma project nicely complement your research papers and can make for a great story arc. It will be important to understand however, if you've achieved any promotions/career acceleration in your workplace. You will have to show evidence of differentiation from the crowd
- The CSR work sounds like a one-off? If yes, it will have marginal benefit. Think of doing something on a more sustained basis
- Though there are a a lot of unanswered questions here, but in general with the right GMAT score and well articulated goals story, purely basis the information here, you should have a decent shot at some good schools out there.

Thanks in advance.
Gopi,
It is great to see that you are starting early. Consulting is highly competitive and the closer you can get to it before the MBA, the better your prospects. The Ericsson brand name will help, but there isn't really much information here to do a detailed analysis.
When it comes to top schools, there are many other parameters to consider than only the GMAT. It is not possible to do justice to all the aspects within the constraints of this forum and hence we've devised the Profile Builder package exactly for folks in a similar situation as yours. So check it out.

Ash,
The reasons you've mentioned are fair - though it still doesn't answer what's your career plan post-MBA.
Jumping into your queries now:
- You can and should evaluate MOOCs as well as other good online courses to show your intent. For recos, the quality of experience is primary. So if you've worked extensively with the CEO, then its a great idea. But if it is just at a hi-hello level, pass it
- It might help if the profile will undergo substantial change. Like if you have good confidence that you can roll out and reach somewhere in your startup. If its going to be more of the same thing, then waiting another year may not necessarily be the most optimal thing to do
- If you've been following the forum, you may already know what I am going to say - check the link here. Most 'good' schools look at all aspects of your profile. It will be premature for me to suggest schools basis the limited data here

I am planning to app this year. My details are as follows:
Acads: Chemical Engineer from Mumbai University with 73% (First class with Distinction). Graduated in 2012.
GMAT: 720 (V:39, Q:49, AWA:5.5) Gave it back in 2011. The website of the school states that GMAT scores are valid for five years.
Work-ex: ~10 months with a global EPC company, where i worked on two different oil and gas projects.
After that, switched over to the largest Oil E&P (Exploration and Production) company in India. My selection was on the basis of an all-India test and the selection percentage was <1%.
Currently working on an offshore platform (colloquially known as 'rig') in the biggest oil field in India.
Part of a six-member team responsible for oil, water and gas processing on the platform. Directly supervise three technicians.
Achievements: One major achievement, but its purely technical.
Extracurricular activities:
Photography: Official photographer at Mood Indigo in 2012 and 2013.
Volunteer work: Currently working with an NGO where i teach basic Maths to underprivileged children with learning disability. Have been working with this NGO since December 2012.
Languages: English and Spanish (conversational).
Career goals: I wish to stay in the O&G sector and that's why i wish to apply to UT Austin because of the fact that they are based out of Texas, just like so many O&G companies. I want to do an MBA so that i can move up into a managerial position. An MBA is necessary as the career growth, in the company that i am working for right now, is pretty sluggish and I feel i am beginning to stagnate. Post-MBA, I wish to work for a Big Oil firm.
In 2014, the admissions director of McCombs, Rodrigo Malta, gave an interview to MBACrystalball where he said that international students find it difficult to find jobs in the energy sector because of visa sponsorship issues.
Hence, I would like to know that with my story and with my aims, would it be possible to get an accept from McCombs?
Thanks and Regards.
Candidates having 9+ years of IT exp(purely technical)
Post by hugeexp » June 30th, 2015, 3:07 pm
Degree : B.Tech
Exp: 9 years in IT/Software development (Completely technical not an iota of management role.Never lead an team .I was always a individual contributor.)
Future plan: To pursue one year mba course from India.
Concern: If I get through mba I would wish to become Product manager.I love technology hence cannot get away from it.My concern is that people like me who were purely into coding etc and never lead a team or performed management functions will find lot of difficulty in getting selected(IIMs look for diversity). If somehow they get through then companies may be not very interested in such candidates during placement as there may be many with some management experience .I mean after 8-9 years one expects such experience but such things are not common in software product companies .I do not say things are impossible for people like me , I just want to test the waters.
Request for Audiences : Please do not put queries like - review my profile, how much salary I will get,how to prepare etc. There are separate threads for such doubts..
I understand one should be positive and do mba for knowledge and not placement , but I request you to be blunt and please share your views.
Nut shell : How difficult will it be for aspirants like me with pure tech experience and having number of years of experience already nearing average experience of one year mba aspirants.

Dear Pabloesco,
Consider the following points and the response to your query:
- The nature of your experience is non-common and niche. This is both good and bad in that you have to ensure that adcoms can look at your experience and know that there is potential for managerial/business roles. Same goes for future employers. So make sure you rake your brains enough and present the right stories about past experience here.
- The GMAT score is valid for 5 years, so don't fret about that. Did you apply earlier though?
- The fact about visa issues is true.O&G placements in the US are not very rosy and that is why, you need to hedge your risks. This could mean applying to more schools than 1, exploring other industries as well as looking at ways through which you can convince the adcoms about your employability.
